Alison let out a silent, self-mocking laugh.
Love her?
She was just about to speak when Maxwell's phone suddenly rang.
He frowned, intending to ignore it, but the moment he saw the caller ID, he let go of Alison and stepped aside to answer.
"Maxwell… I had a nightmare. Can you come keep me company?"
A delicate, pitiful voice came through the speaker. His heart softened immediately, and he responded with a gentle "Mhm" before soothingly adding, "Don't be scared. I'll be right there."
After hanging up, Maxwell grabbed his coat in a hurry.
"Alison, something urgent came up at the office. I have to go."
Urgent?
At this hour, what kind of company emergency could possibly exist?
Alison saw through the lie instantly but didn't expose him.
For the next three days, he didn't come home.
The only message she received from him read, "I'm working on a very important project. I'll be back in a few days."
Alison didn't care.
Until—
The doorbell suddenly rang.
She opened the door to find a sharply dressed man standing outside.
"Miss White, good afternoon. I am Mr. Johnson's assistant. He has arranged for me to take you to try on wedding dresses. Are you available today?"
Alison paused for a second, then nodded.
"I'm available."
Arthur was always meticulous.
He had already pre-selected several wedding gowns for her in advance, ensuring they suited her perfectly.
So, when she arrived at the bridal boutique, all she had to do was try them on and choose her favorite.
Yet, somehow… every dress she put on felt like it had been tailor-made just for her.
She was still struggling to decide when familiar voices drifted in from outside.
Lifting her gaze, she saw Bella linking arms with Maxwell as they walked into the store.
"Maxwell, what do you think of this gown? Should I wear this on our wedding day?"
Bella stood before an elegant white wedding dress, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she looked up at him.
Maxwell gazed at her with a doting smile.
"Whatever you want."
Bella's smile widened. Just as she was about to take the dress into the fitting room, she suddenly stopped in her tracks.
"Alison?!"
Hearing the familiar name, Maxwell's breath caught.
He turned—and there she was.
Alison stood before him, clad in a breathtaking mermaid wedding gown, a diamond-studded veil resting on her head.
Instead, she played along.
"Mm, I'm not in a hurry. I was just passing by and thought the dresses looked nice, so I tried one on."
"Now that I've tried them, I should get going. You two carry on."
After changing out of the wedding dress, Alison left the store.
Arthur's assistant approached her the moment she stepped outside.
"Miss White, did you find one you liked?"
Alison nodded.
"The last one I tried on. Let Arthur know."
"I can get home on my own."
As the car drove away, Maxwell and Bella happened to step out of the bridal shop.
"Alison, who were you just talking to?"
Maxwell frowned, striding toward her.
That man…
He looked familiar.
A bit like Arthur Bridgewater's assistant?
But…
What connection could Alison possibly have with Arthur?
