Leaving the Wrong Love Behind Forever novel Chapter 5

Alison stood there silently, watching the scene unfold before her.

She had thought she wouldn't feel pain anymore.

Yet, witnessing this moment, she found herself struggling to breathe.

Forcing herself to look away, she turned and walked off, unwilling to see what would happen next.

It wasn't until Bella's birthday banquet came to an end that Maxwell and Bella finally appeared.

As Bella saw them off, Maxwell suddenly seemed to remember something and asked gently, "It's your birthday today—why haven't I seen your brother?"

Bella froze for a moment, then shook her head. "I don't know. He's been really busy lately."

Maxwell frowned. "What could possibly be so important that he couldn't even show up for your birthday?"

Although Arthur had always been elusive, disappearing without a trace, this was the first time Maxwell had seen him vanish for such a long time.

Bella pursed her lips, looking a little aggrieved. "You know I don't have the right to ask him about his whereabouts. I'm just his stepsister."

Maxwell didn't think much of it and ruffled her hair affectionately.

"Don't be scared of him. If anything happens, you can always come to me."

Bella nodded heavily, a sweet smile lighting up her face.

"Mm! Maxwell, you spoil me the most."

Throughout their exchange, Alison remained silent.

It wasn't until they finally finished saying their goodbyes that she casually hailed a cab.

"We've both been drinking, so we can't drive. It's late, and calling a driver would be a hassle. Let's just take a cab home," she said.

Maxwell had no objections. He nodded and got into the car.

The ride was quiet.

Sleepy from the alcohol, Alison leaned against the window, her eyelids growing heavier.

Meanwhile, Maxwell sat beside her, his gaze fixed on his phone, a faint smile playing on his lips. His expression was soft, filled with an undeniable tenderness—clearly engrossed in a conversation with someone.

When they arrived home, Maxwell got out of the car first. Just as Alison was about to follow, the female driver hesitated for a moment before speaking up.

"Miss… you should keep an eye on your boyfriend. He's—"

Alison met the driver's gaze, then smiled calmly.

"I know. He's in love with someone else… and he's about to marry her."

The driver looked stunned.

"But it's fine," Alison continued lightly. "Because I've also found someone else. We'll be getting married on the same day."

With that, she ignored the driver's shocked expression and turned toward the villa.

As she walked, a thought crossed her mind.

She pulled out her phone and sent a message to Arthur.

"How's the wedding planning going?"

A few seconds later, she received a reply—but from Desmond White.

"Can't wait to marry me, can you?"

Alison froze.

Or had he really just heard a man's voice?

His lips pressed into a thin line as he stared at her, waiting for an answer.

Alison quickly turned off her phone and slid it under her pillow.

"No one."

Her evasive movements only made Maxwell's unease grow stronger.

Something didn't feel right.

He slowly leaned down, pressing his body over hers, his lips moving closer for a kiss.

But once again, Alison pushed him away.

Tightly wrapping herself in the blanket, she turned her back to him.

"My sleep has been poor lately. Maybe you should sleep in the guest room."

Maxwell stiffened.

For the first time, he felt a strong sense of unease creeping in.

A trace of panic flickered in his eyes as he pulled her into his embrace from behind, his chin resting against the curve of her neck.

"Alison… did I do something wrong?" His voice was low, almost pleading. "Let's talk, okay? Please don't shut me out like this."

He took a deep breath, suppressing the frustration in his voice.

"I'm just a normal man, Alison. It's natural for me to want you. And besides… I love you so much. You're rejecting me over and over—it's like you're sentencing me to death."
