“I would hear her whisper things like: ‘Shadow, Snowy, Sage, why do you think my parents didn’t want me? They must have had a good reason, right? Maybe they made some powerful enemies and had to send me away to keep me safe.’
‘But I also heard I was found in a trash can. Everyone says no parent would do that. They think I must have been stolen by my parents’ enemies and abandoned.’
‘My parents must be so worried. They’re probably searching all over the country for me. I’m sure I’ll see them soon.’”
Bryant’s voice grew heavy with emotion. “I stayed in Spire Village for six years, and in all that time, her parents never came.”
“Eventually, my wife and I left. It wasn’t until this recent commission that I learned what had become of her—that she had finally found news of her birth parents, only to end up with monsters like Paxton and Vivica.”
After his impassioned account, Bryant’s tone softened as he met Neville and Sapphira’s pained expressions. “But thankfully, she found you. And you’ve treated her as your own.”
The five Turner brothers were misty-eyed, their hearts aching for their newfound niece.
“Damn it, I regret not chopping off one of Paxton’s fingers myself!”
“Forget one! Let’s go back there now before they move out and cut off all of them!”
“Wait, let’s grab a knife first! A dull one, like Larissa used. And no helping him this time!”
“And Vivica! I never liked her! Always talking trash about our sister behind her back!”
Gloria frowned. Before she could speak, the ever-observant Rafe stepped in. “Alright, all of you, calm down. Can’t you see you’re giving Mom a headache? The matter is settled. The last thing Larissa wants now is to have any more connection to that family. Stop trying to stir up more trouble.”
