Inside the hospital wing, Finley stood by a window, watching his adopted sister Honora talking on the phone in the garden below, lost in thought.
When Honora had been recounting the day’s events, she’d conveniently left out the part where Leopold announced his intention to go after Larissa. Was she genuinely trying to protect him, or was she just trying to shift all the blame onto Larissa?
For the first time, Finley felt a strange sense of unfamiliarity toward the girl he had always considered pure and kind. Suddenly, Larissa’s words echoed in his mind—that someone had hired people to harm her before she was brought back to the family. And that someone was very likely Honora.
That was why he had asked Leopold, who was already digging into Larissa’s past, to investigate that incident as well. He wondered if Leopold’s men had found anything.
Paxton walked over to his eldest son, who was staring blankly out the window. “You were there today. Was what Honora said true?”
Finley considered for a moment. “The meeting with the client was real, and it’s true that Larissa showed up and we had a conflict. It’s just…”
“Just what?” Paxton’s face hardened.
After a moment’s hesitation, Finley told him the truth. “Leopold didn’t come back with us. He made it very clear he was going to settle the score with Larissa, so…”
So, Leopold had been the one to provoke Larissa first.
But before Finley could finish, Paxton raised a hand, cutting him off. “That’s enough. As long as the first part is true, that’s all that matters. The rest is irrelevant! Don’t you dare mention that last part to your grandfather or anyone else.”
