Flavian’s POV
While Rick was driving madly back to the city, I grabbed my phone to call Detective Albert, but my phone had died and I hadn't noticed. Cam lent me his phone, and fortunately, he had saved Albert's number in his contacts.
"Albert, this is Flavian," I said as soon as he answered.
"Flavian, I'm glad you called. I couldn't reach you. We know where Manuela is, we're on our way," Albert informed me.
"Great! That's exactly why I called. We'll meet at the notary's office then." I was about to hang up when I heard Albert's question.
"What notary's office? Flavian, we're heading to the ravine. Manuela is hidden in a house there," Albert explained.
"Who gave you that information?" I found it suspicious.
"One of the city police officers. He came to me and said the detective is helping Calvin, but he didn't agree with it. He gave me the information and is even accompanying us. By the way, your friends are with us too."
"No, Albert, Manuela is at the city notary's office. That Calvin is going to force her to marry him right now. This was a setup to get us out of the city," I said desperately.
"Are you sure?" Albert insisted.
"Yes, we got to the house where Manuela was, and the woman told us. I'm sure she was telling the truth. Get back to the notary's office as fast as you can. I'll meet you there." I said goodbye and ended the call, hoping we'd make it to the notary's office in time. "Rick, drive this car as fast as you can."
Rick floored the accelerator, and I hoped we wouldn't crash before arriving because we needed to get to the notary's office in time. When we arrived, before Rick could even park, I was already jumping out of the car and running inside.
"Where are they?" The employees looked at me confused, but I noticed one who avoided eye contact and went straight to him. "WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY?"
The young man just pointed to a door. It was locked, but I kicked it down. The door gave way with a crash, and what I saw there enraged me even more, if that was possible.
Calvin was wearing a white suit, sitting next to Manuela, who was struggling while being held by Calvin's thug as Rita was injecting something into her veins. Facing the scene was a gentleman in a suit who was certainly the notary, calmly observing everything. When I broke down the door, everyone looked confused, but Rita finished injecting whatever it was into Manuela, who stopped struggling. Rita turned to get another syringe, and before she could stick the needle into Manuela again, I grabbed her hand. Rick and Cam had entered right behind me and seemed unsure what to do.
"Cam, get Manu out of here now and take her to the hospital, Rita injected something into her!" I shouted at him while handcuffing Rita and pushing her to the ground. "Rick, keep an eye on this snake and hold this carefully, we need to take it to find out what this scumbag gave to Manu."
I turned around and saw Calvin sneaking away. What a coward! His thug was right behind him, and the notary was leaning against the wall, wiping sweat from his face with a handkerchief.
"Stay right there, Calvin, not one step." I cocked my gun and fired a warning shot. Calvin turned and smiled.
I was going to kill this worthless detective! The notary sat back down and began speaking as if this were a normal wedding ceremony. All I could think about was how Albert needed to get here quickly. Calvin had a satisfied smile on his face, and Rita looked the same. When it came time to sign the register, Manuela appeared zombie-like, with open eyes but seemingly unaware of anything happening around her.
"Rita, what did you give her?" Calvin asked, and I wanted to know too.
"Oh, nothing much, just a little something to keep her calm. But she can use her fingerprint in the book instead of signing, right, notary?" Rita turned to the notary.
"Yes, she can. I'll get the ink pad to mark her finger." The notary turned and went to the door I had broken down.
They were calm, as if nothing had happened, as if this wedding was just like any other, with happy newlyweds and excited guests.
"After the wedding, I'll make these three disappear, so none of us will have any problems," Detective Roger said, jabbing my head with the gun barrel.
I looked at Cam beside me, and he silently mouthed the word "calm," followed by "Albert," as if reminding me that backup was on the way. I looked ahead and saw Manu in that chair, like a walking dead, and I wanted to run to her, but it was not just me - Rick and Cam were there too, and I could not rush things and risk that corrupt, unscrupulous detective killing them.
I stayed quiet and prayed our backup would arrive soon. And it was at that moment that the notary returned to the room in handcuffs, led by Detective Albert, followed by his men who entered and subdued Rita, Calvin, and this Eugene guy.
"Shit!" I heard Detective Roger say behind me.
