Rita’s POV
I arrived at the notary's office and Calvin was already there, all smug, acting like he was the groom of the year. He was talking to the notary, and I saw him hand over a thick envelope, surely containing money for the questionable marriage he was about to perform.
"Calvin! Where is she?" I asked as I approached.
"Calm down, Chubby! My bride is on her way." Calvin was very relaxed.
"You should have arranged this at your house or at the farm, so those cops couldn't interfere." I didn't understand why he wanted to do this at the notary's office.
"Look, Chubby, I would have preferred that too, but the notary couldn't travel today, and since I'm in a hurry to get this done, we're here. But nobody's going to bother us." Calvin showed no concern whatsoever.
"Stop calling me Chubby," I warned him, and he laughed, truly a jerk. "How are you so sure they won't find us here before this wedding?"
"I had the detective take care of it, and he sent those idiots to the ravine. By the time they get back, I'll be long gone with Manuela."
"And how did he do that? How did he manage to send all those cops so far away?" I was curious because Flavian had no sympathy for the town's detective.
"He had an officer play innocent, pretend he wanted to help, and give false information." Calvin laughed and looked at the door where Manuela was being pushed in by one of his thugs.
Manuela arrived wearing a white blouse and green shorts, with horrible flip-flops. The clothes were too big for her body. I admired my handiwork, the damage I'd done to that angelic little face, and smiled. There were bruises all over her face, the mark of my ring on both sides - a ring I'd bought years ago just to leave a mark when I hit her - and there was also a bruise emerging on her right eye and running down her cheek, the eye was almost shut from the swelling. I felt like making the other eye match.
"Don't even think about hitting her again!" Calvin warned me, as if reading my thoughts, and walked toward the thug who had entered with Manuela. "Why isn't she wearing the clothes I sent?"
"She refused, boss. And I thought you wouldn't be happy if I forced her to dress." The thug replied.
"You thought right. Manuela, why didn't you put on the dress? We're getting married..." Manuela lifted her head and looked defiantly at Calvin.
"I will never marry you!" She spoke each word with determination and anger.
"Oh, stop being dramatic, Manuela." I butted into the conversation because I loved terrorizing that little rat. "You're going to marry Calvin and that's final, get used to it. You'll never see that detective again, or your little friends, and especially not your daddy."
"I hate you, Rita! I hate you!" Manuela was crying again, and I laughed. "But you can't force me to get married."
"We'll see about that," I said with a smile. "Come on, Calvin, let's get this started. Or do you want me to dress her by force?"
"I already told you not to hit her again. Look at her condition, she won't be able to handle anything on her honeymoon," Calvin complained, and I saw Manuela shudder.
"Then she'll get married just as she is," I smiled.
An employee entered the room through the internal door of the registry office, but the notary pushed him out and locked it. Eugene managed to reach the other door, through which they had entered, just as Manuela put her hand on the doorknob, preventing her from opening it and leaving. I grabbed her by the hair and pulled her back to the chair. The notary locked the door that led to the street as well.
"HELP! HEEEELP!" Manuela wouldn't stop screaming and kicking.
"You'd better shut her up." The notary said to Calvin.
"Leave it to me!" I said and slapped her while still gripping her hair. "Shut your little mouth or I'll do much worse to you."
"I told you not to hit her, Rita!" Calvin complained.
"You want to get married, don't you, Calvin? So let me handle this little rat my way." I looked at him, and he gave up, sitting down in the chair next to Manuela.
"Fine, but make sure she stays quiet and signs the book." Calvin realized it would take more than words to force Manuela to sign the book.
"Don't worry, I brought a little something that will make her very cooperative." I said and pulled out a syringe from my purse.
The syringe was already prepared with a drug that would turn the little rat into a living dead, enough to keep her under control, and after Calvin transferred my money, I would give her another dose that would kill her in no time. I would tell him that the second dose was to make her nice and docile for their wedding night, and he wouldn't suspect a thing.
While positioning the needle in Manuela's arm, I heard a crash in the room. I quickly administered the drug, seeing that damn detective enter the room. My plans were going down the drain. But I could still kill the little rat. I quickly grabbed the second syringe from my purse and prepared to stick the second needle in her arm.
