She knew she would see Joker again. Jonathan had investigated Joker before, but the man’s tracks were well-hidden. During the two years she was supposedly dead, he had kept a low profile. Combined with The Vipers' Nest's tight security, Jonathan hadn't been able to pinpoint his location or activities. And now, just as Niamh had anticipated, Joker had appeared right in front of her. She couldn't help but think that if she hadn’t sensed something was wrong and had followed the clown to the so-called storeroom, she would most likely have been knocked out and kidnapped, then used as leverage against Jonathan. Niamh bit her lower lip. The wonderful mood from a full day of shopping with her best friend had been utterly destroyed by Joker's appearance.
“Nia, we should get home as soon as possible. Especially you…” “Yeah.” Niamh decided against driving her own car, nor did she let Lana drive. She called Jonathan directly on her phone, only to find out he was with Elmer. “We’re at the squash club. I’m buying dinner tonight, you two should come join us!” Elmer’s voice came through Jonathan’s phone. “Because he lost,” Jonathan added, his tone casual but intentionally pointed. Hearing this, both Niamh and Lana couldn’t help but crack a smile, the tension from Joker’s appearance easing slightly.
“You played to kill. Of course I was going to lose,” Elmer’s complaint came from the speaker. Niamh could tell Jonathan had put the call on speakerphone. “It’s called respecting your opponent. Would you rather I went easy on you?” “Yeah, yeah, you’re always right.” Listening to Jonathan and Elmer bickering on the other end of the line, Niamh and Lana exchanged a look. Since when had those two gotten so familiar with each other?
In the end, Jonathan’s bodyguards drove Niamh and Lana to the squash club. By the time they arrived, Jonathan and Elmer had finished their game, changed, and were sitting in the lounge area drinking tea. “You two look pretty relaxed. You have no idea how much danger Nia and I were just in,” Lana said. At the word “danger,” both Jonathan and Elmer’s expressions changed, and they immediately grew tense with worry for Niamh. “What happened?” they asked in unison.
Niamh and Lana sat down, exchanging a glance. “It was Joker…” Niamh took a deep breath. “Lana and I ran into him at the mall entrance. He was disguised as a clown… I think he was looking for a chance to kidnap me.” At Niamh’s words, Jonathan and Elmer’s faces turned grim. “I suspect… he’ll try again soon. The way he looked… it was like he has a terminal illness.”
Niamh had gone out for a day of shopping and returned with one bombshell after another. Jonathan lowered his eyes, lost in thought for a moment. While he was thinking, Elmer was discussing with Niamh and Lana how to handle the threat from Joker. When Niamh told Elmer that Joker’s real goal was likely to make Jonathan suffer by killing her, Elmer shot Jonathan a furious glare. “You’re dragging Nia into your messes again!”
Elmer’s accusation made Jonathan feel a bit wronged. Where did this “again” come from? However, he didn’t argue. He just continued to think. Once Niamh, Lana, and Elmer fell silent, Jonathan finally spoke, his tone serious, but the topic had nothing to do with Joker. “Preston mentioned to me earlier… he wants to throw a welcome-home party for us.”
