Joker looked at Niamh, a hint of surprise in his eyes. “Do I look it?” “Yes,” Niamh nodded without hesitation. Something was very wrong with Joker. After more than two years, he was unhealthily thin, his eyes were lifeless, and his complexion was ashen and weary, as if covered in a layer of dust. If Niamh wasn’t mistaken, only someone with a terminal illness would look like this. But she wasn't naive enough to underestimate Joker's professionalism as an assassin. Still, she believed his physical condition was dire.
Joker shrugged and smiled, a smile devoid of any warmth. “Even if I am sick, it won’t stop me from taking your life.” “You bastard! You’re still after Nia!” Lana couldn’t help but roar in anger. Only then did Joker’s gaze shift from Niamh to Lana. “What, playing the devoted best friend now? I wonder who it was that betrayed her friend and nearly bankrupted her company.”
“You!” Lana was flushed with shame and anger at Joker’s taunts. “I was deceived by you!” “Ha!” Joker let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “You believed everything I said. Was I just that good at deception, or were you just blinded by love?” Furious, Lana took a step forward, itching to punch him. But Niamh stopped her.
Even if Joker was terminally ill, he was still one of The Vipers’ Nest’s top assassins. Although Jonathan had assigned bodyguards to protect them on their shopping trip, they were keeping their distance to give them freedom, protecting them covertly. Niamh was terrified that if Lana got too close to Joker, he might do something to harm her before the bodyguards could react. “Sorry, Nia. I got carried away.” Lana understood Niamh’s concern and, while apologizing, pulled her further back.
The plaza in front of XAD Mall was still bustling with people, none of whom seemed to notice the standoff between Niamh, Lana, and Joker. Joker shrugged again, his smile retaining a hint of its childish quality. But because he was so gaunt and his eyes so dull, the smile was far less charming than it used to be. “Don’t be so tense… I just came to offer my congratulations. It’s a real blessing you didn’t die.”
“Heh,” Niamh scoffed. “Gave you another chance to kill me, is that it?” “What is wrong with you? What did Nia ever do to you?” Lana yelled in frustration, only for Niamh to speak calmly. “Lana, I’m not his real target.” “Then who is?” “It’s Jonathan.” “What?” Lana’s eyes widened in shock. “Nia, if his target is Jonathan… then why is he always fixated on you?” Lana whispered. “Because killing me would make Jonathan suffer more than killing him directly…”
After hearing Niamh’s explanation, it dawned on Lana. “That’s sick.” Even with his true motive exposed, Joker looked completely unfazed. “Consider this a friendly hello for tonight… We’ll be seeing each other again soon.” With that, he turned, waved goodbye, and walked away. Niamh and Lana kept their eyes locked on Joker’s gaunt back, but in the bustling crowd, they both lost sight of him. Neither could say when or how he had vanished into the throng of people. An involuntary shiver ran down both their spines.
In truth, ever since she faked her death and reunited with Jonathan, getting increasingly involved in the Quinn family's affairs and appearing more frequently in the public eye, she had a nagging intuition—
