That night, Alexia was brought into an interrogation room just one wall away from Thaddeus. Logan was Chief Roderick’s man, but he was oblivious to the intricate power plays happening behind the scenes. All he knew was that if he successfully closed this case, he’d score a major victory with the Chief, finally putting his rival, Aaron—that privileged pretty boy who’d waltzed in to steal jobs from hardworking guys like him—in his place. It would be a pleasure to see how he handled his precious almost-brother-in-law. The word would get out that he, Logan, wasn’t afraid of powerful families and had the guts to take on the president of the Abernathy Group. It would build his reputation as a tough, uncompromising cop.
Therefore, he failed to grasp Alexia’s true significance to the case and questioned her like any other suspect. “Thaddeus claims you supplied him with the drugs. What do you have to say about that?”
Alexia feigned ignorance, blinking innocently. “That’s absurd! I have no idea why Mr. Thaddeus would say such a thing, but I have never given him any illegal drugs. Officer, don’t you think he’s just trying to shift the blame? You can’t take his word for it and let him slander an innocent person like me!”
Logan’s tone was harsh. “You’re his personal physician, with unrestricted access to the Abernathy estate. You had the motive and the opportunity to plant drugs in his office. According to our investigation and witness statements, you and his assistant, Gordon, were the two people who most frequently entered his office. No one else had that level of access. Furthermore, you have direct contact with pharmaceuticals. Crystal Ice was developed from a powerful sedative used to control the central nervous system. That falls right into your area of expertise, doesn’t it? Do you really think you can clear your name?”
Alexia’s heart pounded, but her resolve was as firm as ever. “So, every doctor is a potential drug dealer? That’s ridiculous! I only gave Mr. Thaddeus standard medication for his headaches and stress. If you don’t believe me, search my home, investigate my social circle. See if you can find a single connection to a drug dealer! I may be just an ordinary doctor, nothing compared to a powerful magnate like Mr. Thaddeus, but you can’t just accuse me of drug trafficking. This is a baseless accusation, a witch hunt!”
“You’re not just an ‘ordinary doctor,’” Logan countered, his mind sharp even if his investigative skills were second to Aaron’s. “You’re the personal physician to Chad, the eldest son of the Abernathy Group. You’ve been with him for years, haven’t you? I may not be part of high society, but I know how these things work. The Abernathy family has two sons. The younger son is in power, so naturally, the elder son feels resentful. A little sabotage to take down the competition and clear a path to the top… it’s a classic story, isn’t it? You’re Mr. Chad’s person. He placed you by his brother’s side to make a move when the time was right. The motive is clear.”
Hearing the truth laid bare, Alexia felt a jolt of panic. If there were a lie detector in the room, she’d be exposed in an instant. Still, she forced herself to remain calm and scoffed. “Officer, you have quite an imagination, but you’re judging a gentleman by your own petty standards. My employer was Mr. Thaddeus’s childhood savior. They may be half-brothers, but our Mr. Chad has never once looked down on or bullied him. He spent years abroad recovering his health and never made a single move against Mr. Thaddeus in all that time. If he wanted to eliminate him, he had countless opportunities over the years. Why wait until now, when his brother is at the height of his power? Doesn’t your theory seem a bit illogical? You’re just inventing a motive to pin this on me!”
