Thaddeus sat beside Ivan, composed and silent, but he was deeply impressed by this unassuming man. He was known for his proud and aloof nature; there were very few people in the world who could earn his admiration. If he made it through this ordeal and returned to the Abernathy Group, he would personally extend an offer to Ivan to become the company’s chief legal counsel, with a salary of his choosing.
As expected, Logan’s expression stiffened under the barrage of questions, and he let out a frustrated breath. He’d been completely outmaneuvered.
“You can bring my client in for questioning, you can even suspect him, that’s all fine. But every case must be handled according to one principle—due process,” Ivan stated, his calm demeanor radiating the powerful aura of a high court judge. “But if you cannot produce evidence proving my client used or purchased drugs, or find any new witnesses, then the most you can do is hold him for twenty-four hours.”
The junior officer, still fuming, snapped, “He’s a powerful tycoon! Of course he can get this stuff through illicit channels without anyone knowing! His inner circle is full of loyalists who would do anything for him; they’ve probably already gotten their stories straight!”
“Shut up!” Logan shot the officer a glare.
“So, it seems you have no evidence after all. Then there’s nothing more to discuss,” Ivan said with a faint smile. “If you want to investigate Mr. Thaddeus’s staff, be my guest. How you do it and whether you find anything is your problem, not mine. If you intend to hold him for the full twenty-four hours, I will remain here with my client. In the meantime, I’d appreciate a cup of coffee. Black, no sugar. Thank you.”
…
Fuming, Logan stormed back to his office, only to be met with more bad news from a subordinate. The surveillance footage from Thaddeus’s office, where the Crystal Ice was found, had been completely erased. It was so thoroughly wiped that it couldn’t be recovered. Now, whether Thaddeus had put the drugs there himself or someone had framed him was a total mystery.
They had no idea that Evadne had been one step ahead. She had immediately instructed Gordon to completely delete all surveillance footage from Thaddeus’s office—both favorable and unfavorable—and destroy it. She had to sever the police’s evidence trail and make it impossible for them to charge Thaddeus with possession, which would have only made things worse.
As Logan was racking his brain, an officer hurried in. “Captain Logan, there’s someone here to see you!”
“Can’t you see I’m busy? If it’s not urgent, you handle it!”
“He says he’s a witness. He can prove that Thaddeus uses drugs!”
Logan’s eyes lit up, and he bolted out of his office. Standing in the hallway was a nervous-looking middle-aged man, clutching a manila envelope.
