Sweat beading on his forehead, Gordon leaned in, peering over Thaddeus’s shoulder at the laptop screen.
Thaddeus slid the memory card into the slot and hit fast-forward, scrubbing through the dashcam footage frame by frame while listening intently to the audio.
"Mr. Abernathy, this thing only records what's outside the car," Gordon lamented, a note of frustration in his voice. "We can't see a thing inside, only hear. If someone snuck in and messed with something, we'd never know."
The minutes ticked by, each one stretching into an eternity. Just as Gordon’s eyelids began to feel heavy, Thaddeus spoke.
"The video has been edited."
Gordon jolted awake, swallowing hard. "What? But… but it looks seamless. I didn't see any difference."
Thaddeus’s eyes were cold as he removed the headphones. "There's a faint sound of airflow, but there’s a section where the ambient noise doesn't match up."
His senses were razor-sharp, a skill worthy of an ancient warrior.
"You're a genius, Mr. Abernathy!" Gordon breathed, giving him a stunned thumbs-up before a chill of apprehension washed over him. "But who would be bold enough to do this? To tamper with your car right here at Windermere Estate, under your very nose?"
A sharp beep echoed in the silence.
Thaddeus’s expression hardened as his long, powerful fingers flew across the keyboard. Rows of cryptic data flooded the black screen. Gordon held his breath, watching in awe as Mr. Abernathy once again unleashed his hacking skills. It was almost enough to make him swoon.
"Mr. Abernathy, you're so damn cool! If Mrs. Abernathy could see this, she’d be absolutely swept off her feet!"
"Nonsense," Thaddeus said, his fingers freezing for a fraction of a second. "Her skills are breathtaking. Compared to her, I'm just an amateur."
His mind flashed back to the first time Evadne had revealed her hacking prowess to him—the astonishing speed of her fingers, the confident, brilliant smile on her lips. The one and only, the utterly stunning Ms. Ashbourne. Even now, the memory sent a wave of warmth through him, stirring emotions he couldn't control.
Gordon blinked, hiding a smile. The trauma to his brain may have damaged Thaddeus’s emotional regulators, but it couldn’t erase the profound love for Evadne etched into the depths of his soul.
"I knew that man was no good!" Gordon was practically vibrating with rage. "He came back to usurp your power! He's a wolf in sheep's clothing, even in that wheelchair!"
Gordon’s face flushed with anger. "He doesn't just want your power; he wants Mrs. Abernathy, too! He wants to take everything you have!"
Thaddeus’s broad shoulders tensed, his breathing catching for a moment. Was it the realization of his brother's unfathomable scheming beneath a kind façade, or was it Gordon's last sentence that struck him?
*He wants to take Evadne?*
"I was the one who broke up with her," Thaddeus said, his jaw tightening as he stared at the floor, the words sounding forced even to his own ears.
"But it's crystal clear he's been scheming against you behind your back!" Gordon was so agitated he felt like his hair was on fire. "Today, he tampers with your car. Tomorrow, he could be planting cameras in your study! This time he ruined your date with Mrs. Abernathy. What about next time? What if he sabotages one of your projects and uses the opportunity to oust you? Then, as the rightful eldest son, he can swoop in and take over the Abernathy Group! Are you really not worried at all?"
Each question was a sharp jab to Thaddeus’s heart. If his brother had returned with the sole purpose of destroying him, why had he risked his life to save him from those kidnappers all those years ago? Had Chad always been like this, or had twenty years hardened the once-kind and gentle man he remembered?
