Dixie figured that since the Hanes didn't love her, they might as well just provide her with money.
When she offered to take on the two-million-dollar compensation, Luther's eyes lit up. He'd always known that she came from a well-off family.
Unlike him who had to claw his way into this current company, Dixie had been supported right from the start. Plus, her polished appearance hinted at her family's wealth.
Yet, he hadn't realized the Hanes would be so affluent that they could casually handle such a large sum.
Luther made up his mind as he firmly refused, "No way! I'm a man! If there's compensation to be paid, I should carry that burden. You shouldn't be the one paying, and I'll never agree to that!"
"Luther… You're the best… If only I'd met you sooner…" Dixie was choked up.
"Me too, Dixie… I…"
As they confessed their romantic feelings for each other through the wall, detainees who'd eagerly listened in wore faces contorted in disgust.
One of them who'd had enough pounced on the iron bars and yelled at the officers, "Officer! Please move me somewhere else! I can't stand being in here with these two idiots!" He feared that he'd be infected by their cheesiness.
With that, others in the cells on both sides chimed in. They were disgusted and tired of listening to the couple's flirting.
The man was a manipulative flirt, and the woman was a hopeless romantic. An older woman in Dixie's cell had tried to warn her not to trust a man like that, but she gave up after noticing Dixie's reaction.
There was nothing she could do to help a hopeless romantic.
"Why can't you ever make things easy for us?" Her mother, Carly Taylor, chided her.
Her heart ached as she noticed Dixie's disheveled appearance. She was about to say something out of concern when Dixie's father, Hugo Hane, spoke up.
"I've looked into everything. The Jensens won't let this slide, so a settlement likely won't be enough.
"Luckily you didn't lay a hand on anyone, so just stick to your story that you had no involvement and that your colleague was acting on his own. I'll hire a top-notch lawyer to get you home as soon as possible."
Carly nodded along to assure Dixie that everything would be fine.
But Dixie's face twisted in disbelief. She shook her head firmly and declared, "No! I won't abandon Luther!"
