A muffled laugh broke the silence in class, followed by scattered chuckles and even outright snickers.

Most of the students at the mystic school had prior exposure to mystic arts or connections to spiritual schools. Some like Shannon had a fair degree of skill.

In a place where knowledge of mystic arts was common, it was rare for someone proficient in these skills to get tricked by ordinary people, let alone fail to escape. Mike was a first.

"I see now. So, it was that fool."

"Hah. Imagine the effort; The lecturer had to go all the way to Macondo to fetch him back. If it were me, I'd be too embarrassed to show my face at the mystic school."

Though their voices were low, those who wanted to hear them could certainly do so. Some of the students who were initially amused now felt a bit awkward, while a couple of more upright classmates frowned and were about to defend Mike from the mockery.

But Mike was faster to respond. "Yep, that's me, Mike Carney. Sorry for the embarrassment. I didn't think scammers these days would outsmart me." He laughed heartily.

He took it all in stride and showed no shame or anger at being tricked. Instead, he joined in their mockery of him.

His openness to joke with his classmates made those who'd been laughing at him lose interest, and they soon fell silent.

The previously awkward students joined in the laughter again. Some felt more at ease and teased him. "Tsk! You've got the guts to laugh it off. You're already famous among the newcomers."

A student curiously asked, "Macondo is known to be full of scammers. How did you end up walking right into it?"

Shannon glanced at Mike again and started to piece together how he'd been duped.

Sure enough, Mike sighed helplessly. "I couldn't help it… They offered too much money."

Shannon scoffed. She'd figured as much. Though they had only met twice, she was starting to get a sense of his nature. He was greedy.

Shannon raised an eyebrow. And so what?

Then, Mike pulled out his phone and tapped on a QR code. "Compensation for emotional distress. 50 dollars will do."

Shannon was utterly speechless. Was he trying to reclaim the 50 dollars he had "discounted" yesterday?

Thankfully, the lecturer's arrival cut him short.

Logan Cain was responsible for teaching both newcomer classes at the mystic school and was akin to the head of the freshman year. He was the one who'd gone to Macondo to save Mike.

Since Mike was one of the newcomers, it fell to Logan to handle the case.
