The paper figure landed lightly on the ground and started toddling toward the Stone Turtle stone sculpture.
Shannon noticed the flash of gold in the corner of her eye, and when she turned, the paper figure was clambering up the sculpture base.
She was in the process of understanding the behavior of the magical golden paper figure and was curious if it had some sort of independent consciousness, so she stayed where she was and observed its actions.
The paper figure climbed onto the base and continued to make its way up one of the front limbs of the Stone Turtle.
Just as Shannon thought it might be attempting to climb higher, the paper figure suddenly went limp. It plastered itself onto the front limb of the Stone Turtle and looked like a simple lifeless paper cutout once again.
Shannon's eyes flickered. She wondered if Benjamin's golden light had worn off.
She quickly walked over and picked up the paper figure off the stone sculpture. Upon closer inspection, she realized that the paper figure was still emitting a faint golden light though it was slightly dimmer than before.
Right now, the paper figure sat up and looked at her somewhat dazedly.
It seemed that she'd jumped to conclusions. This magical paper figure wasn't going to revert to its regular self so easily.
But she didn't place it back on the Stone Turtle. "There's a rule here in school that no one is allowed to offend the Stone Turtle."
Regardless of whether the paper figure understood, she tucked it into her pocket, grabbed her suitcase, and headed toward the dorm.
As she turned to leave, she thought she heard a faint sigh as though it had come from far away yet resonated deep within her.
She paused and listened carefully but heard nothing further.
Shannon's gaze drifted toward the surrounding mountains encircling the university. Recalling what Lexie had said about other students training in the mountain, she assumed that the sigh was an echo from the hills and continued her way.
As soon as she took her seat, she found herself face-to-face with a familiar man sitting in front of her. It was none other than Mike from yesterday who'd charged her 50 dollars.
Mike was also dressed in a modified robe, but his hair was slightly messy. There were dark circles under his eyes suggesting he hadn't slept well. Though so, he didn't appear tired and was quite energetic.
"Hello, we meet again." Mike greeted her enthusiastically.
"I didn't expect us to be classmates. What a coincidence. Let's get to know each other. I'm Mike Carney, and I look forward to getting to know you better."
Shannon looked at him and was unsurprised. She calmly nodded and said, "I know who you are."
Then, she added, "You're Mike Carney, the student who got tricked into going to Macondo and barely made it back."
Mike was rendered speechless.
