Maureen had no idea what Gus was thinking about. All she knew was to reach into the wardrobe and pull him out.
She was experienced enough to know that Jack had passed out, drunk, after hitting Gus, so time was temporarily on their side.
She used all her might to carry Gus out of the wardrobe, only for a large hand to appear behind. Without warning, her hair was yanked back, revealing the man they thought was unconscious.
Maureen screamed, fear and terror creeping onto her face. Gus was similarly scared. He held onto her hand, intending to save her from Jack's grasp.
However, reality hit like a cruel joke.
Jack yanked Maureen's hair with ease, dragging her out of the room while cursing coarsely. Seeing that, Gus stumbled after them, ignoring the pain pulsing through his wounded body.
Outside, Maureen was once again forced to the ground, with Jack striking her with terrifying force.
Each blow landed on her chest and head, unrelenting. Gus thought he heard something crack, but whether it was bone or his own heart, he couldn't tell.
He lunged forward to stop it, only to be thrown back with frightening strength.
Blood stained Maureen's face and even smeared across Jack's hands. Gus' vision blurred, and his tears began welling up in his eyes.
His gaze shifted to a firewood hatchet lying by the wall. A surge of strength rose within him, and he moved toward it, limping, before his fingers closed around the worn handle.
He lifted the hatchet but froze. The weight of it wasn't just in his hands but in his future.
Zidane let out a sigh. He raised his hand but was halted by Mordecai, who disagreed with his intervention. "Even if it ends in patricide, that is his destiny."
"I know," Zidane replied and nodded.
Yet even as he spoke, he shoved Mordecai aside without hesitation and raised his hand. A beam of mystic light shot toward the hatchet in the boy's grasp.
The blade gleamed coldly, its chilling light cutting through the tension like a knife through fog. The sight of it seemed to attract Jack's attention.
