If the snowstorm was truly a trial from the Divine Power for Celestria, should they, as outsiders, refrain from intervening?
Benjamin's question was naturally directed at Lucan.
As the Dragon Guardian of Celestria, Lucan was more knowledgeable about the fate of the kingdom than anyone. He would surely understand whether this disaster was a divine calamity or a man-made one.
Lucan listened to Benjamin's inquiry but didn't answer immediately. Instead, he countered with a question, "What would you do if it were a divine calamity?"
Neither Lucan nor Elowen had ever asked about the origins or identities of Benjamin and Shannon, even though they knew they were living souls from the alternate world.
He gazed at Benjamin, sensing a familiar yet entirely different energy from him, and asked, "During the atonement rite, you called down divine punishment. Why were you certain the heavenly lightning would not strike?"
Lucan had seen everything that transpired during the atonement rite, just as Elowen had. He could clearly sense the unusual energy that surrounded Benjamin at that moment.
It was similar to his own—a burden of the nation's fate—but it also carried a distinctly different… almost earth-like presence.
As a dragon, Lucan knew better than anyone that delving too deeply into matters could violate the laws of the Divine Power.
Although he and Elowen had been curious about the couple's identities, they had never pushed further. But now, he was indeed curious.
Benjamin had asked whether this had been a divine calamity or a man-made one. If it were the former… Could he and Shannon intervene to prevent this disaster?
"Who are you—and she—truly?"
Lucan's question didn't attract a raised brow from Elowen. She simply stayed quiet and looked at him with a hint of worry.
Benjamin met Lucan's gaze directly.
After a brief pause, he exchanged a glance with Shannon, then replied steadily, "I can only say that there is a connection between us and your world. As for the calamity Celestria is facing…"
He continued, "If it's man-made, rooting out the mastermind will be enough to help your land weather the crisis."
Now that everything had been laid bare, Lucan wished to hear their choice—would they stay or turn away?
Benjamin and Shannon stood silently before him, as if seeing in Lucan and Elowen the reflection of their past lives.
They both knew they should avoid entangling themselves too deeply with their past selves, yet somewhere deep within, a voice called to them.
"Stay, and you will find the answer you seek."
As for which question that answer belonged to, neither of them knew yet.
The atmosphere froze; even Velquin had stopped nibbling at his eggshell.
After a long silence, Shannon pierced the still air. "If we leave now, does that mean we'll have to cancel my coronation?"
She certainly couldn't make Benjamin a man with no credibility to his words, could she?
