Shannon dismissed the senior handmaiden and took a sip of the drink before pursing her lips. "This is too sweet."
At that, "Grace" perked up her ears. She immediately took a seat beside her—almost too casually—grabbed the drink, took a sip, and remarked, "Is it? I find it delicious. What is this?"
Shannon quietly looked at the handmaiden, who acted like she had known her forever. Although she wore Grace's face, she obviously had no intention of pretending.
After a pause, Shannon replied, "A milkshake."
It was Benjamin who had someone make a modern recipe, just to satisfy her cravings.
Seeing how intrigued Elowen was by the drink in her hands, Shannon quietly handed over the emerald straw sitting off to the side.
Elowen took it with curiosity, poked it into the cup, and gave it a sip. The milky flavor rushed into her mouth at once. Instantly, her eyes lit up as she took another, much bigger slurp right after.
As Shannon fixed her stare on her, she called out, "Elowen."
Elowen, still wearing Grace's face, glanced at Shannon but didn't stop sipping the milkshake.
The latter got straight to the point. "You came into the palace posing as Grace. Was it for Lucan, the one who was with you before?"
The moment Lucan's name left Shannon's lips, Elowen finally paused mid-sip and shot her a sideways look. "Who told you that? I certainly have not come here for him! I came for you!"
"Oh?" Shannon asked, "And what business do you have with me?"
Elowen narrowed her eyes at her, studying her for a long moment before answering, "I wanted to see what you are."
Though she could tell at a glance that the soul inside Shannon's came from the alternate world, she couldn't make out the true essence of its divine soul.
She had never seen this soul before, yet… Something about it felt strangely familiar, as if drawn by an invisible thread.
She couldn't ignore that feeling, so she came to figure Shannon out and maybe… keep an eye on Lucan, that dragon, while she was at it.
Grace and Serena were one such case.
As a Ten-Tailed Elythune, she could read the threads of past and future through the Divine Power.
So, when she saw that the one who had brought about Grace's death was none other than her childhood friend, curiosity stirred within her.
What, after all, was human nature?
"I helped her return as a revenant so she could confront the one who'd betrayed her," Elowen said idly, "I just wanted to see how she'd exact her revenge. But honestly… it was a little disappointing."
Grace had never once tried to drag Serena to hell with her. Her so-called vengeance was simply haunting her silently, staring day after day, chipping away at guilt until it cracked.
Even when the murderer finally confessed to the weight of her sins… She was still allowed to live.
