Moments later, Shannon sat in a carriage Liora had hastily arranged.
Four matrons bore its weight at the corners, while four maids followed on either side. She was conveyed in great comfort to the courtyard where Elysia resided.
The gatekeeper at Frostfall Cottage caught sight of the respectful procession from afar and was quite taken aback. Liora was leading a whole group of maids with utmost respect and carrying a carriage?
When she caught sight of the person sitting in it, she was utterly stunned. Was that not Serelith?
Hadn't Liora set out to deal with her? Why was she being escorted in a carriage?
Could it be that Serelith was dying? Yet she didn't look like it at all!
The gatekeeper's mind spun with countless thoughts, but she dared not ask Liora. She could only watch as Liora ushered Shannon through the gates, full of courtesy.
The main courtyard was warm. Elysia sat at the head seat, amused by the chatter of several young children gathered before her.
At a nearby table, a few matrons and maids busied themselves laying out dinner.
Today, she'd summoned the children to dine with her. As for Serelith, whom Liora had been told to handle, she was an ill-fated creature not worth a second thought.
So, when word came that Liora had not only failed to send Serelith to the countryside but brought her here, Elysia instinctively frowned with displeasure.
She was about to rebuke Liora for incompetence when Shannon lifted the curtain and stepped inside.
When she noticed the full room, she arched a brow in surprise. "Everyone seems to be in attendance."
With one glance, she noticed they bore a familial resemblance and knew they were Serelith's supposed brothers and sisters.
What had she just said? The Ignis residence in ruins?
A cunning glint flicked in Solvanna's eyes before she softly said, "You mustn't speak such angry words, Serelith. Your three-day-punishment without food was Father's order, meant for your sake.
"If you find it unbearable, just send word and plead with humility. To act as though obedient while defying his will, and going as far as to steal food, such conduct is a far cry from the noble standing of a proper lady."
Her expression filled with sorrowful disapproval.
Shannon looked at Solvanna. Though this was their first exchange, her words and tone stirred a strange, long-forgotten familiarity.
She didn't linger on the feeling and sweetly retorted, "You've stolen 15 years of meals without shame, so why should I be deemed not acting noble for having just one meal?"
