Liora had never imagined Shannon would dare raise a hand against her.
Though the trueborn daughter of the Ignis family had returned to the manor for three months now, her former meek nature made it hard for the maids to take her recent change seriously.
As Elysia's trusted confidante, Liora was well-versed in handling such situations. What could a mere young lady like Serelith do even if she wished to resist? They were sure she could barely fight off a few.
She waved to the maids she'd brought with her and coldly commanded, "Go. Teach Lady Serelith the virtue of obedience."
At once, the group surged forward and rushed toward Shannon.
Shannon still had one maid pinned beneath her hand, but her gaze abruptly shifted toward Serelith, who was still mustering her courage.
When Liora's group had first entered the courtyard, Shannon had swiftly infused Serelith with some mystic light. The glow had caused Serelith's ghostly and scattered ghost form to solidify, and it gave her the first ounce of strength to fight back.
Shannon had given her first lesson then and there. "When others come knocking for fights, do not cower. Strike back."
Serelith didn't understand the word "cower", but she vaguely sensed it was Shannon's way of teaching her to be brave.
Now, watching the group rush toward Shannon, Serelith finally gathered her resolve and lunged forward to plunge into the maid Shannon had pinned beneath her palm.
Shannon released her grip accordingly.
The maid, whom Serelith had possessed, straightened up and turned around. Then, she threw her arms around a fellow maid nearby and announced, "You are not to hit her!"
Her voice was not loud, but it marked her first step of courage.
Shannon gave a faint nod of approval. While all present were momentarily stunned, she raised her foot and delivered a kick to one of the women at the front.
"If no action is taken, I fear he may lose his soul. When he wakes, he shall remain a fool for life…"
Liora's expression shifted at the mention of her treasured grandson. She'd opened her mouth to scold Shannon for prying into her family affairs, but froze at the rest of the latter's words.
It was true that her grandson had begun with nightmares and tremors, followed by a fever that showed no sign of breaking.
If what Shannon said was true, her grandson might be…
In that instant, she realized this was no ordinary Serelith. The same was for the maid who'd acted yet changed sides just moments ago.
Liora dared not take the risk and lowered her voice to ask, "What do you want?"
Seeing her relent, Shannon finally let go and replied, "I shall not make things difficult for you and go with you to Lady Elysia, but I expect to be treated with courtesy."
