"Why are you here?" she asked, keeping her composure.

"It was Mrs. Osborne," Emma replied. "She brought us here. Said it'd be safe. But those people stormed in. Their leader said something to her, and they dragged her and Miss Mathis off."

"Why did she bring you here?"

"She said it was a safe spot."

"You knew all along Mrs. Osborne was hiding Erica, didn't you?"

The two maids' faces went pale.

"You were both at the house that night," Debra pointed out. "And you saw Enoch come back. Erica was upstairs, then ended up in that basement room. Emma, you said you were downstairs all night. You had to have seen her. What really happened?"

"Why hide her at all?" Debra frowned. "You could've handled it better."

"There was no better way," Mabel said, shaking her head. "She's been trapped in the house her whole life and has no one to tell. We hid Miss Mathis because Mrs. Osborne saw how much Mr. Randy Osborne cared about her. If she vanished, he'd come looking, and you'd all follow. Then you'd see the clues we left and figure out the situation."

She sighed, "We tried sneaking out Miss Mathis at night, but those people caught us."
