Although Lindsey nodded her head, she still looked a little reluctant and upset.
Zayn saw her somewhat childish look and could not help but pull her into his arms. "Do you really wanna eat that so badly?"
"It's fine." Lindsey glanced at him and said in a soft voice, “I just wanna eat with you. I know we can’t finish so much food...”
The tip of his nose felt sore. Zayn blinked back his tears and gently patted her head like he was coaxing a child. "I promise that I’ll eat with you every day in the future, okay?"
Her eyes suddenly lit up. Lindsey’s eyes were red, but the joy in the bottom of her eyes was undisguised. "You said so! No backsies!"
"Mm, do you want to make a pinky promise?" Zayn smiled at her.
He did not expect Lindsey to stretch out her slim pinky. Her eyes were curved as she said, "Yes, pinky promise!"
Their pinkies were entwined and Lindsey even childishly chanted, "Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye!"
Then, their thumbs were pressed together.
Time seemed to dial back to that afternoon more than twenty years ago. A little boy was hiding in a corner away from everyone and kept wiping his tears, but no sound came out.
Suddenly, there was a childish voice behind him, "What are you doing here?"
The little girl with messy pigtails and mud on her arms and face looked at him unblinkingly with her frighteningly bright eyes.
The two of them no longer remembered how they finally accepted one another as friends after initially hating each other. They only remembered the young Zayn and Lindsey in the sunset with their pinkies intertwined as they made a lifelong promise to each other.
Their entanglement was for a lifetime.
It was very late by the time their meal was delivered, during which Lindsey surveyed the place where Zayn lived and finally concluded, "If we weren’t here, this apartment can just be a showroom."
Lindsey also went to check the bathroom, wardrobe, and shoe cabinet in front of Zayn like she was looking for something.
However, Zayn did not say anything as he followed her around and laughed when she did her rounds.
After going around, Lindsey went back to the wardrobe and opened the wardrobe door. She then pointed at the two sets of clothes inside and said with disbelief, “Is that all you have?!”
Zayn did not know why she suddenly asked this, but he still nodded and replied, "Yeah, what's wrong?"
Lindsey, who was smiling earlier, suddenly frowned, and her eyes drooped. "So you didn't even think about coming clean with me, nor did you think to stay in Atlantic City for long?!"
Zayn was stunned. When he saw that Lindsey was about to cry, he quickly closed the wardrobe door and said, “Well, I didn’t have the time to go shopping, and it’s not convenient for me to go out. Why don’t you shop for me?”
The tears in Lindsey's eyes instantly vanished and she excitedly said, "Okay!"
Zayn wanted to rub his forehead, but when he saw Lindsey questioning him like this, he inexplicably felt a little happy.
When their meal finally arrived, Lindsey's stomach had already started to growl.
The waiter placed all the dishes on the table. Lindsey took her fork and placed a slice of meat on Zayn’s plate, then she began to pick at the dishes.
Although Zayn thought that he had refrained from ordering too much earlier, he still ordered a lot and they did not finish their food.
During the entire time, Lindsey ate a lot, but Zayn did not eat much and was just putting food on Lindsey’s plate.
