"I only saw a shadow. I don't know how it appeared outside my window..." As Lindsey said that, she suddenly remembered that Dezi was next door.
Lindsey sat up at once and could not care less about being afraid anymore, then just jumped off the bed. Although she was in a hurry, she did not make much noise when she moved.
She tiptoed out of bed and did not bother wearing her shoes. She opened the door to her room and felt her way to Dezi's door with the light from the floor lamp in the living room.
Lindsey gently opened a small crack in Dezi’s door. When she saw the little one sleeping soundly on the bed, her gaze turned soft and she breathed a sigh of relief.
She gently went forward and carefully picked Dezi up while she observed his reaction as she was afraid that he would suddenly wake up.
Probably because Dezi was too tired from going to school all day, Dezi raised his hand and lowered it the next second. His mouth moved a little, but he never opened his eyes. He just squirmed and found a comfortable position in Lindsey's arms, then settled down again.
Lindsey was in a rush to get out and did not bring her phone with her, so she did not hear Soren's response.
She carried Dezi to Mrs. Wendy’s room. Lindsey did not know what the people outside intended to do, so she had to wake Mrs. Wendy up.
Since the three of them were usually alone, Mrs. Wendy did not lock the door when she slept, so Lindsey gently pushed the door open and went in. She made her way to the bed and gently nudged Mrs. Wendy’s shoulder.
Mrs. Wendy was fast asleep. When she felt the nudge on her shoulder, she opened her eyes slightly and in a daze, she saw someone carrying something next to her bed.
She almost screamed, but Lindsey already expected it, so she quickly covered Mrs. Wendy’s mouth and whispered in her ear, "It's me, Aunt Wendy! There's someone outside."
After saying that, Lindsey raised her chin slightly and pointed to her window.
Mrs. Wendy’s eyes were wide open. She was scared to death. She quickly reacted to what Lindsey said and blinked twice, then nodded at Lindsey.
Only then did Lindsey let go of her.
After seeing that Dezi was in Lindsey’s arms, Mrs. Wendy hurriedly reached out to carry the boy and wrapped him in a blanket. She asked Lindsey in a low voice, "What now?"
The two of them were sweating, but they were inexplicably relieved to be huddled together.
"Should we call the police?" Mrs. Wendy could not help but ask again, then glanced out the window from time to time.
Lindsey also thought about this earlier, but those people might have already run away when the police came, so it was useless.
She did not have her phone with her and did not know if Soren and Sieben had noticed that shadow. She kept an eye outside, but there was no one knocking on the door or ringing the doorbell.
Lindsey thought about it and reached for Mrs. Wendy’s phone, then dialed Sieben's number, but for some reason, no one answered.
Her eyes flickered, then tightened the blanket on Dezi before she got up to walk carefully to the window. Mrs. Wendy tried to pull her back, but she could not and only looked at her nervously.
Lindsey went to the window, pressed herself against the wall, and carefully lifted a corner of the curtain to look out warily.
There was nothing, but her heart did not calm down at all.
The two of them were very nervous and were both startled by this knock. Mrs. Wendy held Lindsey's hand tightly. Surprisingly, Lindsey felt some pain in her fingers from her tight grip.
When Lindsey was speaking to the police earlier, her voice was not too soft. It had only been a few minutes since, so the police could not have come so quickly.
They were nervous and afraid of the unknown behind the door. The two of them froze for more than ten seconds before they could make a move. Lindsey did not open the door but reached out to check the surveillance monitor on the door. When they saw the person on the screen, both of them were stunned.
Mrs. Wendy let go of Lindsey's hand and stepped forward to pull the door open with a look of surprise and relief. "Zayn?"
Zayn nodded to her slightly, then walked in. His gaze swept across Lindsey's body and whispered, "Don't be scared."
Lindsey froze the moment she saw him. When she heard Zayn's words, she subconsciously nodded. Only after that did she realize that something was wrong. "Why did you come here?"
"Soren said that someone climbed up from outside, so I came to check it out," Zayn said while he turned on the lights in the room. He looked back at Lindsey and asked, "Where’s Dezi?"
The sudden brightness in the space made that unsettling feeling fade. The presence of the man in front of her probably dispelled her fear.
Next to him, Mrs. Wendy picked up the child from the sofa and said in a suppressed voice, "He’s here."
They did not dare to let Dezi out of their sight. Dezi was wrapped tightly in a blanket, and their movements did not wake him up. Zayn reached out to stroke Dezi's head, then signaled for her to put him down.
"What's going on?" Lindsey asked as she took two steps forward and walked up to Zayn. Zayn did not say anything, but his eyes were glued to her.
