“Isn’t it a little early to decide if he’s really my half-brother?” Fiona picked up her mug of hot cocoa, took a small sip, and said calmly, “Funny you should ask. I actually have the hospital’s DNA report from back then.”
Jane’s stepmother froze for a split second, then lunged for the report in Fiona’s hand. She’d kept this secret buried for over ten years—there was no way she could let it surface now. Fiona really was her worst nightmare.
But Jane was quicker. She shoved her stepmother aside and snatched the report from Fiona. Her eyes flew over the page, and when she saw the results—paternity match: zero—she went pale. Jane stood up and slapped her stepmother so hard, the woman crashed to the floor.
“You liar!”
Mrs. Kidd looked completely stunned, her hands trembling as she picked up the report. But she fought to keep her composure. “Jane, there’s got to be some mistake. Carson looks just like your father! You can’t just trust Fiona’s word and think Carson isn’t your brother.”
Jane’s face was cold. “Grandma, let’s have the family doctor come and check.”
That was it for Mrs. Kidd. She didn’t even bother defending Carson anymore, just nodded heavily, her expression dark.
Now Jane’s stepmother started to panic. If this secret got out, she was finished. She glared at Fiona, hatred burning in her eyes. She wanted Fiona gone—permanently.
Suddenly, she lunged at Fiona, but Jane was ready. She waved over a few maids, who quickly pinned her down so she couldn’t move an inch.
