"No one holds a candle to Fiona," Jackson said, tousling her just-woken hair with a fond smile as he sat beside her. "I just happened to know she was friends with Allen, and thanks to his recommendation, she got a foot in the company door. Honestly, I still don't even know her name."
That put Fiona's mind at ease, but she still wondered about Allen's connection to her. It seemed her hunch was right all along.
"I've been reading the news lately. Most of it is probably bogus, right?" Fiona asked, fishing a piece of candy from her pocket and popping it into her mouth. Jackson stopped her, "We're about to have dinner. Hold off till later."
Fiona nodded, setting the candy aside, and turned back to Jackson. "So, what's the deal with her looks?"
"Nash, could you head out and grab Fiona a cupcake?" Jackson instructed.
Nash, who had been listening with great interest, looked up, slightly incredulous. "Aren't we about to eat dinner? Why a cupcake?"
Jackson shot him a frosty look, and Nash quickly made for the door. He wasn't afraid of much, but Jackson was an exception.
After dinner, Jackson drove Fiona and Nash back to school. They walked one behind the other toward the campus field.
Before they could even start chatting, Mr. Trevor suddenly appeared behind them, scolding them sternly. "At your age, you should be focused on your studies, not early romances!"
The two exchanged glances, as if sharing a private joke, and Fiona, in particular, turned and walked away.
"You two, bring your parents in. I need to have a serious talk with them about this."
