Flora and Connor had just stepped out of the lab when a loud explosion rocked the air around them. They spun around, their eyes widening as flames danced wildly behind them, like fireworks lighting up the midday sky. Flora's lips quivered slightly in shock.
"Flora, sweetheart!" Crimson shouted, rushing over to her and wrapping her in a protective hug, tears streaming down his face. "How did you get hurt? Does it hurt? Jules, hurry and check on Flora!"
Crimson quickly shrugged off his jacket and draped it over Flora's shoulders. Jules hurried over as well, practically elbowing Connor aside in his haste to examine her.
"It's all good, just some minor cuts and bruises," Jules said, patting his chest with relief. "Flora, come inside with me. Let's get those wounds taken care of."
"Yes, yes, let's tend to those wounds right away!" another voice chimed in.
"Flora, we’ve got some food ready for you too. You must be famished. Have a bite once you're patched up!" someone else added.
"Oh, our poor darling has been through so much!" cried Amanda, Ethan, Karter, Raul, Henrik, and a host of others who had gathered around, showering Flora with care and concern, while Connor stood to the side, practically invisible to the crowd.
Where once there was a throng at the lab's entrance, now everyone had followed Flora inside, leaving Connor standing alone.
Moss and Beck shared a knowing look, feeling a pang of sympathy for their boss.
"Uh, boss," Jason said, eyeing Connor with a hint of pity. "I'll call someone from the Medical Division to patch you up."
Connor was still bleeding from a wound in his abdomen, but no one seemed to notice.
"Hey, bro, don’t sweat it. I’m here with you," Kruz said, patting Connor on the shoulder with a sympathetic grin. "I've been sidelined since forever. Now that Flora's around, it looks like you’re sharing my spot at the bottom of the pecking order."
Connor shot him a look, brushing his hand away. His eyes scanned Kruz, Moss, Beck, and Jason with a hint of menace. "The border needs some hands. Interested? Or maybe you'd prefer the project in Africa?"
Jason clammed up immediately, while Moss and Beck snapped to attention.
"They're still working on it. The explosion was so intense that it left nothing but debris," Crimson replied.
Flora massaged her temples, trying to process everything.
"We've managed to take control of the island and scored quite a haul," Crimson added with a grin.
Eula had left behind a trove of treasures—various toxins, poisons, and a wealth of advanced medical gear.
Jules was beside himself with glee, orchestrating the removal of anything that could be useful for his experiments.
Listening to Crimson, Flora couldn’t help but find humor and irony in the situation, though she remembered something Eula had said earlier, about her mother hailing from the Martial World...
