The atmosphere in the other car was completely different. Although Marina remained expressionless, she couldn't dampen Rhiannon's excitement. "I knew it! There was no way Carson would actually marry Phoebe!"
She turned to Marina, practically buzzing. "The person Carson really loves is you!"
Marina leaned against the window, her tone utterly bored. "What makes you think that?"
Rhiannon smiled. "When he said he only chooses the best, I thought he meant Phoebe. But looking back at it now, he was clearly talking about you!"
A mocking smirk touched Marina's lips. That man could spout the most beautiful sweet nothings without a second thought. Only a fool would believe him!
And the pathetic truth was, she had actually been that fool.
...
Marina quickly lost the energy to dwell on it. After she had left earlier that day, her vice president hadn't managed to lock down the deal with the prospective investors.
The project had originally been backed by the Foster family. When they abruptly pulled their funding, a total collapse would result in a massive loss for Marina's company. She needed a new partner, fast.
Returning to the office, she personally called the director of the other company. His assistant picked up, stating that Mr. Larry was in a meeting.
An hour later, Marina tried again. This time, Jared Bailey answered. "I just got out of a meeting," he said politely. "I have to leave for a business trip to B City immediately. I'll be back in about two days. We can touch base then."
Marina had no choice but to agree. "Alright, I'll wait until you're back."
Hanging up, Marina looked out the window at the darkening sky, feeling exhaustion seep into her bones.
