After the banquet ended, the two families said their goodbyes at the hotel entrance.
While Marina stepped aside to take a phone call, Rhiannon took the opportunity to approach Carson just as he was about to get into his car. "Carson!"
Carson stopped and turned around. His demeanor toward Rhiannon remained as respectful and polite as ever. "Mrs. Evert."
Rhiannon looked apologetic. "I don't know why Marina suddenly insisted on calling off the engagement. If she's in the wrong, I apologize on her behalf."
"There's no need," Carson replied, his expression unreadable.
Rhiannon sighed. "Marina has been so overwhelmed with the company lately. She's working until midnight every day and hasn't had a good night's sleep in weeks."
Carson frowned, his eyes turning icy as an inexplicable wave of anger surged in his chest. "Since the engagement is off, there's naturally no need for any more business ties. This is exactly what she wanted!"
"I know, so I don't blame you. Marina has a backup plan anyway. If the company really goes bankrupt, she'll just move to B City to build her career."
Carson narrowed his eyes. "B City?"
Rhiannon nodded. "Her grandpa is in B City."
Carson let out a cold scoff. "I highly doubt her grandpa is the real reason she's going to B City!"
From what he knew, Sean Shepherd was based in B City. She was going there to run straight into that man's arms!
The company going bankrupt was just providing her the perfect excuse. She should probably be thanking him!
A chilling hostility settled deep in Carson's eyes. The raging fury in his chest made it almost impossible not to storm over and interrogate her on the spot.
