"Mom! Dad!" Charlotte looked frantically at Grandpa and Grandma Evert. Her joyous mood had plummeted into an abyss, leaving her looking like a flailing clown.
Grandpa Evert frowned deeply. "This... this is something you should have discussed with us beforehand!"
Grandpa Foster glanced around the room and chuckled. "Actually, I think Kai and Phoebe make quite a lovely couple. Phoebe, what do you think?"
"I..." Phoebe looked up, dazed, and met Kai's eyes. His dark, brooding glare made her heart skip a beat.
Charlotte kept frantically shooting Phoebe looks, silently screaming at her not to agree.
To everyone's shock, Phoebe nodded, offering a soft smile. "I don't have any objections."
Kai's face instantly darkened further.
Charlotte's eyes widened in horror. She grabbed Phoebe's wrist, grinding her teeth. "Are you out of your mind?" she hissed.
Phoebe's eyes held a desperate, reckless resolve. She clamped her jaw shut, pretending not to hear her mother's scolding.
Charlotte then yanked on her husband's sleeve. "Say something!"
Jude Evert's brother frowned and lowered his voice. "Mom and Dad are right here. It's not our place to speak."
Grandpa Foster smiled and turned to Grandpa Evert. "Both kids are on board, and I have no objections either. What do you say?"
A cold chill gripped Kai's heart, and a thick wave of hatred boiled over. Both of them agreed?
When did he ever agree?
He never had a choice in his birth, and now he didn't even have the right to choose his own wife?
Grandpa Evert looked at Kai, then at Phoebe, before forcing an awkward, reluctant smile. "This is just so sudden. I wasn't prepared for this at all!"
"Why did you agree?" Kai demanded coldly.
Phoebe offered a bitter smile. "We are both just pawns for our families' interests. Do we ever really have a say in who we marry?"

It wasn't until the waiters came around to pour the wine that Marina finally snapped out of her shock. She instinctively looked toward Carson, only to find him already watching her, his dark eyes bottomless and unreadable.
Marina stiffened and immediately looked away.
The atmosphere at the table slowly recovered, though Charlotte seemed entirely crushed, her face looking like a thundercloud the entire time.
Phoebe had already prepared the engagement rings for the exchange, and Carson had also prepared one for Kai.
Seeing the sealed velvet box, Marina finally realized that Carson had planned this entire farce from the very beginning.
