Kai's gaze swept across the room, lingering briefly on Marina before turning to Carson. "Did you need me for something, Carson?"
He knew today was the day Carson and Phoebe were getting engaged.
He genuinely couldn't fathom why Carson would abandon Marina and choose Phoebe.
But this undeniably gave him a sliver of hope. At the very least, Marina would no longer be tied to Carson Foster!
Phoebe had been stunned from the moment Kai walked in, wondering why Nocturne was suddenly here. But when Kai addressed Barton as 'Father' and Carson as his brother, her shock turned to absolute disbelief.
It took a few seconds for it to click: Nocturne was Carson's brother. He was the Foster family's illegitimate son, Kai Foster!
Nocturne was Kai!
Phoebe was so stunned she almost jumped out of her chair.
In an instant, everything fell into place. Why Kai and Ashen had abruptly ended their collaboration at the peak of their success. Why Kai always hesitated whenever Ashen's name was brought up. It was because Carson stood between them!
Kai must have known Ashen was Marina long before the convention. So why had he insisted she participate with him?
Was it to provoke Carson, or did he have feelings for Marina?
A whirlwind of thoughts tangled in Phoebe's mind like a chaotic knot. She stared blankly at Nocturne, but the man didn't spare her a single glance.
Suddenly, a new question hit her: Why had Carson called Kai here?
To witness their engagement?
Did Carson know she had feelings for Kai and wanted to crush her hopes?
While Phoebe's mind raced, Barton finally asked, "Carson, why did you tell Kai to come?"
"You're going back on your word just to humiliate Phoebe!" Charlotte raged.
Carson smirked. "I only said the Evert bride would be swapped to Phoebe. Did I ever say I was the one marrying her?"
Charlotte was stunned speechless.
Kai's face was ashen, his eyes stormy, his fists clenched so tightly his whole body was trembling.
Phoebe kept her eyes cast down, completely silent, her thoughts unreadable.
Carson continued, "If you refuse and insist on breaking the engagement, then the Foster family will immediately terminate all business ties with the Evert family. Mrs. Charlotte, I suggest you think very carefully."
Charlotte was furious, her face contorting with rage. "Are you threatening us?"
"It's not a threat, it's a statement of fact. If the engagement is off, why would the Foster family continue investing in your projects? Out of charity?" Carson drawled lazily. "And don't bother questioning my authority. I am the one pulling the strings in the Foster family right now!"
