“What do you mean?”
“He’s still your brother. Blood. And you are going to fight
against someone who’s practically family.”
His hand paused on my back, and I felt him take a deep breath.
“It’s not easy,” he admitted. “But he stopped being family the
moment he decided to hurt you and Mia. Blood doesn’t mean
anything if there’s no loyalty.”
I tilted my head to look at him, my hand resting on his cheek.
“We’ll be there for you. You won’t do this alone.”
He kissed my forehead, “Now I just want to skip all those shits
and get to that vacation we were talking. I was thinking maybe
we should go to the human world, you know? What’s a better
place to hide from everything than there?”
“Great idea. And we should definitely visit my old apartment. If
it’s still there.” I was excited. That apartment was dingy and
small, but it stood for an important part of my life. I’d never
forget it.
“Do you ever miss that! suddenly asked, his tone curious.
We’d never talked about that period of time before. Because we were kept apart back then. He was mateless and I was wolfless. It was painful for the two of us. This was the first time he
asked.
I laughed softly. “Not exactly. It was. complicated. People don’t trust what they don’t understand, and it was hard to blend in.”
“And do you ever date a human?” he asked, a teasing glint in his eyes, and there was a tinge of jealousy in his voice.
I rolled my eyes. “No, I didn’t. It wasn’t worth the risk. Besides, humans were. ordinary. They didn’t feel like home. Not the
way you do.”
That seemed to please him, and he grinned. “Good. I want to be your only one. The only one who matters.“”
“You are,” I said sincerely, my fingers tracing patterns on his
chest. “And you’re mine.”
He smiled, leaning down to kiss me. “Our future kids are going
to know what real love looks like. They’re going to believe in it
because of us.“”
Chapter88
I raised an eyebrow at that, a small laugh escaping my lips.
“How many kids are we talking about here?”
He smirked, a playful glint in his eyes. “A whole football team.”
I burst out laughing, “You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m thinking
two. Maybe three if I’m feeling generous.”
“Two?” he said, feigning offense. “That’s barely a warm–up.“”
I swatted his arm, still laughing. “You try carrying a whole
football team’s worth of kids and then come talk to me.”
He chuckled, pulling me closer. “Alright, alright. Two it is. But I
reserve the right to ask for a third.”
“We’ll see,” I said, grinning.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand, and I felt my heart sink.
Calls this late were never good news. I reached over and
grabbed it, my stomach churning as I saw Jayden’s name on the
screen.
“Asher,” I said quietly, handing him the phone. “It’s Jayden.”
He frowned, sitting up as he answered. “Jayden? What’s going
on?”
Chapter88
I couldn’t hear Jayden’s words, but I saw the way Asher’s
expression darkened, his body tensing. My heart started racing
as I watched him nod, his jaw tightening with each passing
second.
“Alright,” he said finally, his voice low. “We’ll handle it. Thanks
for letting us know.”
He hung up and turned to me, his expression heavy. “What
happened?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
“It’s your foster mother,” he said, his tone heavy. “She.passed
away.”
