Adrian's body lurched forward. The elevator doors, which had been closing, sensed his presence and slid open again.
Selene's face filled his vision. He looked down, his gaze locked on her eyes. As the space between them vanished, he noticed the surprising thickness of her lashes and the natural, untamed way her eyebrows grew. Her eyes were strikingly clear, a stark contrast of black and white. She was looking up at him, her face perfectly illuminated, free of shadows.
And then, a soft warmth pressed against his lips. The air around them seemed to thicken.
His mind exploded. A firework of pure white light detonated behind his eyes, leaving him completely blank, his vision unfocused. The light in the elevator seemed to intensify, bleaching the world around them. All he could see were her eyelashes, fluttering gently.
When the softness retreated, her fingers uncurled from his tie. Selene's palm was damp with sweat. She took a shaky breath and found her voice. Adrian was still bent over, frozen in the position she had pulled him into. She gently pushed his chest, righting him.
She pressed the 'close door' button, then glanced back at the man standing outside. The lobby was dimmer than the elevator, and half of his tall frame was lost in shadow. She couldn't read his expression, nor did she try. Her eyes caught a glimpse of the skin over his Adam's apple, flushed a delicate pink in the light.
As the doors slid shut, Selene braced a hand against the elevator wall. She let out a slow breath, replaying the sensation. Adrenaline surged through her, and a wave of endorphins washed away the day's accumulated exhaustion. After the kiss, she felt lighter, her mind clearer. She could probably work energetically into the early hours of the morning now.
Downstairs, the sensor light in the elevator lobby had gone out. If it weren't so late, anyone calling the elevator would have been greeted by the bizarre sight of a man with a completely flushed face standing frozen in the dark.
Adrian, who had been holding his breath, finally gasped for air. He could hear his heart hammering in his chest. Though enveloped in darkness, his eyes were shining like jewels.
"Ah!" he whispered, a low, breathy sound, and scraped his fingers against the closed metal doors.
