Harrison’s brow furrowed tightly. “Dames is your son. How can you be so cold? Can’t you even hold him for a moment?”
Selene shot back, “Do you remember what you said to me when I told you Dames didn’t want to be close to me? Do you?”
Harrison stood frozen, a flicker of confusion passing through his eyes.
A cool, almost amused laugh slipped from Selene’s throat. Clearly, he’d forgotten.
The ever-busy CEO of Vaughn Enterprises—he’d never truly regarded his own family as anything more than an afterthought.
“You said a boy shouldn’t depend on his mother. You said Dames was the future heir to Vaughn Enterprises, and that it was my job to rein in my emotions, to act like his tutor, not his mother.
I told you your mother was always badmouthing me in front of our son, and you said she was just stating facts. You said she’s right—I’m just a country girl, completely out of my depth, and that I only got into the Vaughn family by some stroke of dumb luck.
Otherwise, you all would’ve hired a nanny with better credentials than someone like me.”
It was as if a thousand needles jabbed into Harrison’s chest, a suffocating pain tightening around his heart.
The ache crashed over him in relentless waves, threatening to pull him under.
He wanted to say something, to explain, but when he opened his mouth, no words seemed strong enough.
In the end, all he managed was, “Dames is just a child…”
Selene’s pale, clear features remained untouched by emotion.
“Then do your job as a father and teach your son properly.”
Harrison pressed his lips together, a dull ache spreading through him, like someone had pressed a live wire against his chest—painful, numbing, but in some twisted way, he couldn’t let go of the agony Selene made him feel.
“You mean Harrison really said those things to you? Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
Carmel grabbed Selene’s sleeve, her breath coming in hot, angry puffs.
“How could you hide something like this from me?”
