“If Harrison ever goes to Africa one day, you can bet it’ll be because he wants to go—no one could ever force him.”
Leo fell silent. On the other end of the call, Selene could only hear his steady breathing.
“Professor?” she prompted softly.
Leo’s voice finally came through, gentle and familiar. “You sound just like you did seven years ago.”
Selene’s shoulders twitched, warmth creeping up her ears.
Suddenly, she remembered something and said, “Next week, Charteris Academy is hosting a school gathering. Daph’s performing. If Altair’s interested, I’d love to invite him to come watch.”
Leo replied, “Alright, I’ll talk to Altair about it.”
Just then, Adrian’s voice drifted over with a teasing lilt. “Selene, you’ve been ignoring me for three whole minutes~”
Instinctively, Selene turned to find Adrian watching her with soulful eyes, like a lonely puppy longing for attention.
That look—so hopeful, so expectant—made her heart melt. Her cheeks instantly flushed red.
Adrian, suddenly realizing what was going on, said, “Ah, are you on the phone with Leo? That’s fine, really—it’s fine! I can just keep enjoying the view out here by myself.”
He checked his Patek Philippe, raising an eyebrow. “It’s almost ten. Can Leo really keep up at his age? Don’t overwork the old man, Selene.”
Leo: “…”
Every word Adrian said drifted straight into Selene’s phone, loud and clear.
Leo’s voice came through again, “Are you with Adrian?”
“Yes,” Selene answered quickly.
“Then I won’t keep you any longer,” Leo said kindly. “Get some rest.”
“Goodnight,” Selene blurted, flustered.
On the other end, Leo hung up.
Putting her phone away, Selene turned to Adrian and reached out to pinch his cheek. To her surprise, his skin was so taut she could barely get a grip—there was no squishy cheek to pinch.
Adrian tipped his head back, and her fingers slipped down to his chin. The whole thing felt rather like she was flirting with a bashful boy.
“How am I overworking the elderly? Besides, he’s not that much older than you! If Leo’s an old man, then what does that make you?”
Adrian caught her slender, pale wrist and pressed his face into her palm, nuzzling her hand like an overgrown retriever.
