At the press conference venue.
Polly, bundled up in disguise, was waiting anxiously at the entrance of the parking lot.
When she spotted Ebony Fox, she sprinted over, winking furiously. "Ebony Fox, there are way too many people. Sneak in through the right side."
"What's there to be afraid of?"
Ebony Fox parked the car, unbuckled her seatbelt, and ruffled Polly's hair, giving her an indulgent smile. "I haven't done anything wrong. Why should I be afraid?"
"I'm afraid you'll get hurt." Polly looked up with her round face, her eyes red. "I promised Mr. Kurt I'd protect you."
He had been so good to her, and she had already lied to him.
If she let Ebony Fox get hurt on top of that, she wouldn't even have the face to look at him again.
"Ebony Fox, do Ms. Payne and Mr. Schwartz know about this?" Polly stared at her pleadingly, clearly terrified by the massive crowd. "Should we ask them to come here too?"
"They wouldn't even need to do anything. Just pull up two chairs and have them sit on either side of you."
Then we'd see which reporter dared to write any nonsense.
"Acting like my bodyguards, huh?" Ebony Fox laughed, her lips curving up. "If they came, this press conference would truly look like a shameless attempt to wriggle out of trouble."
"Ebony Fox..."
Polly blinked and opened her mouth to speak again, but Ebony Fox cut her off. "Don't worry. Did you forget what I do for a living?"
Unless they had a death wish, no one would dare lay a hand on her.
"Let's go."
Ebony Fox pushed the car door open, smoothed her hair, and with steady, unhurried steps, she walked calmly into the crowd.
"Ebony Fox is here!"
Someone in the crowd howled.
In an instant.
Every single camera lens and the hateful glares of the public.
Locked onto Ebony Fox all at once, like a barrage of synchronized arrows.
They looked as if they wanted to pierce her full of holes and tear her limb from limb.
"Click, click, click—"
A relentless wave of camera shutters went off, loud enough to shatter eardrums.
Damn it all.
Polly clutched Ebony Fox's bag to her chest and rolled her eyes dramatically at the sky.
Those in the know recognized it as photography. Those who didn't might think they were being gunned down by a machine gun.
It was ridiculously over the top.
"Ebony Fox, could you tell us the purpose of this press conference?"
