Wiona felt her heart twist painfully.
Paige… Did she actually have feelings for her dad? Was that what this was about? And her mom’s death—was it really not an accident after all?
She barely had time to process it before Paige’s sobs broke through again, this time a little softer, almost pleading.
“Carter, can you please calm down? You’ve got it all wrong,” Paige said, voice shaky. “I did love him, once, but that’s ancient history. I let it go, I swear.”
“We talked about this when we got married, remember? You promised you wouldn’t bring it up anymore.”
“And when Luna… when Luna died in Stonehill, I was out of the country. You can’t just blame me because you’re jealous. I’m her sister-in-law. Why would I ever do something like that over a man?”
“Carter, please. I’m begging you, just calm down…”
Carter’s reply was ice cold. “Enough.”
“Calm down? How am I supposed to do that?”
“When Luna disappeared in Stonehill, I wanted to tell the whole family, but you kept telling me to wait, to stay calm. And because of that, I never found her again.”
“She died on the street, Paige. Hit by a car, left with nothing, no one even knowing who she was.”
“What did she go through? What really happened? I’ve been in the dark all these years.”
“That driver killed himself, and not once did I ever think you had anything to do with it. Not until today. Not until your Thompson family stooped so low, trying to stop Wiona from finding out the truth about who she is.”
“Paige, you should never have meddled in Wiona’s life.”
Paige’s voice came out in a raw, desperate scream. “I didn’t! I told you, I didn’t do it! Why can’t you believe me?”
“Even if… even if I did anything, it was for us. For our family. For Ryan.”
“Luna’s been gone for years. Why should the Blue family fortune be split in four, leaving a share for her?”
“I only said those things today because I can’t stand that Wiona just walks back in and gets a quarter of everything.”
“I was just thinking about Ryan, about our son. You’re already the weakest of the Blue brothers, Carter. If I don’t fight for us, what are we going to leave for Ryan?”
“Honey, please, don’t do this…”
Carter’s voice was flat, final. “We’re not like your Thompson family. The Blue family doesn’t need to fight and scheme for what’s rightfully ours.”
The room went silent, the kind of silence that feels heavy.
Carter came out first, looking pale and furious, but there was something defeated in his eyes as he glanced at Wiona. He knew he’d been set up by his newly returned niece, but he didn’t fight it. He’d kept this secret for over twenty years, and the weight of regret had almost broken him. Now that it was out, he seemed almost relieved. Whatever happened next, he was ready to face it.
Paige followed close behind. Her face was ghostly pale, her eyes darting everywhere, refusing to meet anyone’s gaze.
Stephen was trembling, pointing at Paige, his voice shaking with fury.
“You… you are devil itself!”
“Back then, Carter was crazy about you, insisted on marrying you, and none of us agreed. If he hadn’t threatened to end his life, if you hadn’t already been pregnant with Ryan, do you really think a Thompson girl could have married into our family?”
“And after all these years, have we ever treated you badly?”
“Your whole Thompson family gets VIP treatment in our Blue family hospitals, you know that better than anyone.”
“People talk about your family’s reputation, but have we ever said a word?”
“You were an illegitimate child, but after marrying into the Blue family, did anyone ever look down on you?”
“We protected you, gave you peace, and this is how you repay us?”
“My daughter is dead, and for the sake of a little inheritance, you dare to say such heartless things!”
