“The Thompson family?”
Ryan’s whole demeanor shifted. His mom was a Thompson, which made them his own family on his mother’s side. He couldn’t help but glance at Wiona, searching her face for answers.
She’d mentioned them before. Last time, she brushed it off as a misunderstanding. But now she was bringing them up again. There had to be more to it.
After their last talk, Ryan had tried to ask around, but he hadn’t heard even a rumor about any problems between Wiona and the Thompsons. If anything, that only made him more curious. Something about this just didn’t add up.
“Wiona, do you actually know someone from the Thompson family?” Ryan finally asked.
“You’ve brought them up a couple of times. Did something happen?”
“Do you want me to help?”
He leaned back, thinking. “The Thompson family’s pretty complicated. Even if someone does show up tomorrow, it’ll probably just be a few people.”
Wiona acted like she was considering it. “There really was a misunderstanding,” she said. “But it’s nothing serious. I don’t need you to step in.”
“If you say so, I guess we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
Ryan still wasn’t convinced. If this was just a simple misunderstanding, why hadn’t he heard anything? He looked at Wiona’s calm expression, then glanced at Mateo and the others. They didn’t know her well yet, but the fact that she’d brought up the Thompson family twice couldn’t be a coincidence. There had to be more going on.
Ryan opened his mouth, but Mateo gently stopped him.
Mateo lowered his voice, speaking softly, “Wiona, are you hiding something from us?”
“We haven’t known each other long, but we all care about you.”
“Maybe... you could try trusting us?”
Wiona hesitated, caught off guard for a second.
She really had done it on purpose—mentioning the Thompson family again so Ryan would spread the word. Maybe she’d get some kind of reaction out of them tomorrow.
She hadn’t expected her cousins to get so anxious, though. All of them stared at her, worry written all over their faces.
Wiona felt something inside her flutter. Could they really care about her, even if they’d barely spent time together?
She stayed quiet for a moment. When she finally looked up, her eyes were as gentle as always, but this time there was a hint of something real. “You guys are overthinking it.”
“Seriously.”
“If we run into anyone from the Thompson family tomorrow, you’ll see for yourselves.”
