But who swapped the body?
There were just too many people involved. The forensics team? The folks who moved the body? The drivers who transported it? Nobody could say for sure.
Another investigation kicked off. People dug around, but the whole thing fizzled out before long.
The reason came quick enough. The driver who’d hauled the body was found dead too. His corpse turned up in a pond out by the city limits, right next to Wilson’s missing body.
Then the rumors started swirling. Someone claimed the driver’s daughter had been a student at Wilson’s old piano school, and she was one of the victims in his scandal from years ago.
Just like that, the case of Wilson’s missing body was declared closed.
But Conrad got wind of something even stranger from Owen.
“Mr. Sullivan, I can only tell you this in private.”
Owen’s voice dropped. “Wilson’s brain is gone.”
Conrad blinked. “You mean his actual brain?”
He let out a half-laugh, half-scoff. “Someone seriously dug out Wilson’s brain?”
Owen nodded. “That’s right.”
“Even though his body was found with the driver’s, his skull was opened up.”
“My friend who works as a forensic pathologist told me, just between us, the brain cavity was totally empty.”
“We don’t know exactly when it disappeared.”
“And now, the higher-ups have completely sealed all the files.”
“I won’t even be allowed to look at the case records in the future.”
“Mr. Sullivan, I think it’s safe to say this whole thing is getting buried for now.”
Conrad got the message.
Wilson’s scandal had already made waves everywhere. Louisa’s so-called suicide was clearly to keep her quiet. The body swap was a clumsy cover-up. Now, with the investigation shut down and the case sealed, whoever was behind this was probably going to lay low for a while.
But Conrad knew the calm was just an illusion. The truth was, under the surface, Stonehill would never be truly peaceful again.
He took Wiona back to Hawthorne Hall first. After checking in on their two sons, he was about to rush out again to handle some urgent business.
Just as he was heading out the door, something occurred to him. He leaned in close to Wiona and murmured in her ear, “Wiona, don’t forget to check your phone.”
Check her phone?
She realized she hadn’t looked at it all day, since she was with Conrad from morning till now. She had no clue what was happening outside.
As soon as Conrad left, she finally picked up her phone. She hadn’t even unlocked it yet when she noticed everyone in the room giving her these odd looks. Shelly and the others were fighting back smiles.
Wiona glanced over at her mother-in-law, Annette.
Annette was trying—and failing—to hide a huge grin, her whole face lit up with joy. Wiona couldn’t help but smile too, even though she was completely lost.
