Conrad wasn’t taking any chances. He was determined to get to the bottom of what was happening with his two sons, no matter how much effort it took.

Tatum gave a confident shake of his head. “Kane’s fine. I’m sure of it. Right now, only Derek is showing any signs of poisoning. I even checked Kane’s test results myself, so there’s nothing to worry about.”

Hearing this, Conrad finally let out a deep breath, relief washing over his face. “Thank you. The Sullivan family owes both you and Ms. Morgan a huge debt. I promise, I’ll help you however I can.”

Madison waved him off right away. “Please, Mr. Sullivan, you don’t need to be so formal. This is just what I’m supposed to do. Honestly, most of the credit goes to Tatum.”

Tatum just shrugged, hands in his pockets, his voice cool. “It wasn’t a big deal. Wiona, I actually came here today because I wanted to talk about something with you. About the Blue family. Could we have a moment?”

Conrad nodded and quickly gathered his sons and his mother, quietly leaving the room for Wiona and Tatum to talk alone. Madison followed their lead and slipped out as well.

As soon as they were alone, Tatum got straight to the point. “Mateo wanted me to pass on a message. Our grandparents are turning eighty next month, and he was wondering if you’d be willing to come back to the Blue family for the celebration.”

Wiona hesitated, her voice soft. “So… have Grandma and Grandpa accepted me?”

Tatum shook his head. The flicker of hope on Wiona’s face faded right away.

She’d told herself over and over not to expect too much. Still, hearing it out loud stung a little more than she thought it would. She tried to brush it off. Family isn’t something you can force, after all. In that moment, she reminded herself not to care so much.

Tatum noticed her reaction and, for once, his usual calm slipped. “Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that they haven’t accepted you. The truth is, Mateo and the others haven’t told them about you yet.”

Wiona frowned, confused. “Why not? Wasn’t that the whole point of their trip home?”

For now, Tatum and Madison decided to stay at Hawthorne Hall. Once he was settled in his room, Tatum called Mateo.

“I talked to her, but you should be prepared. Wiona didn’t seem excited at all. I don’t think she’s interested in coming back to the Blue family.”

Mateo let out a long sigh. “Dad and the others are just being too cautious. I get where Wiona’s coming from. We haven’t treated her the way she deserves. I’ll go to Stonehill myself and invite her. She is still our family. We’re not going to leave her out in the cold.”

Thinking back on everything that happened that day, Tatum brought up another worry. “Mateo, do you think the person who poisoned Derek could have something to do with Wiona’s background? She mentioned the Thompson family out of nowhere last time. I know she said it was just a misunderstanding, but I can’t help thinking they’ve already done something.”

Mateo rubbed his forehead, feeling a headache coming on. “Even if the Thompsons have influence, I doubt they could reach inside the Sullivan family’s home. I still think it’s more likely someone from inside the Sullivan family. Either way, just focus on helping our nephew get better. And, if you get the chance, ask Wiona about the Thompsons. If it turns out they really are behind this, trying to keep her from coming back to the Blue family, then we’re not just going to let it slide.”
