"Mr. Salisbury, I'm so sorry for your loss," the officer said quietly. "We're doing everything we can to track down Isaac and the person who hurt your father. Later, we'll need you to come to the station to give a statement."
Jace barely heard him. He staggered back, leaned against the wall, then slid down until he was sitting on the floor. So, Bianca had been missing all this time because Isaac had kidnapped her. He tortured her, kept her locked away. The memory of Bianca at the wedding flashed through his mind. She had been so thin, almost unrecognizable. A heavy pain pressed on Jace's chest.
What kind of brother am I? She asked for help at the wedding. She looked right at me, and I did nothing. I was too focused on the bigger picture. I let her down. She must have felt so hopeless that ruining the wedding was the only thing she had left.
Jace wiped at his eyes, but the tears kept coming. He remembered what the officer had said about the fetus Bianca had… Was it Isaac’s? The thought made his skin crawl.
Why would Isaac do this to Dad? He always acted like the perfect son, caring and loyal. Had it all been a lie? If he could hurt Bianca like that, and hide it so well, maybe he’d been planning this from the start. Jace thought back over everything that had happened since Isaac returned. The Salisbury family had been hit by disaster after disaster. It felt like someone was twisting a knife in his gut.
He pushed himself up, legs trembling, and walked over to the officer. "You recorded everything, right? The listening device… can I hear the recording? I need to know why Isaac did this. Please… I have to hear it."
The officer hesitated, glancing away. "Mr. Salisbury, I’m not sure you’re ready for the truth."
Jace watched the medical examiner zip up his father’s body bag, his throat tight with grief. "Is there anything left that I can't handle?" he whispered.
But when the recording started, Jace realized he had no idea what true cruelty looked like.
He heard his father, Daniel, begging for a quick death. Isaac just laughed. Daniel screamed, and another man’s twisted laughter mixed in, sending chills down Jace’s spine.
"Well, look at you," the stranger sneered. "Old, but still not bad looking. Not bad at all."
