Even someone as tough as Isaac couldn't help but let out a scream before he flung the box across the room. It landed perfectly flat on the floor. For a moment, Isaac just stared, his face turning ghostly pale as something horrifying clicked in his mind.

“Isaac, what’s going on?” Daniel’s voice shook as he called from the bedroom. He’d heard the scream and was already trying to get up, struggling against a body that just wouldn’t cooperate anymore.

Daniel had finally been discharged from the hospital, and now he and Isaac were living together in the last home the Salisbury family still owned. It was an old three-bedroom apartment, barely big enough for memories, let alone pride. Jace had probably left it for them on purpose, a last safe place to land after everything else had been sold off. Daniel didn’t care where Jace had gone or what he was doing. All that mattered was that in this low, lonely time, he still had his youngest son by his side. That was all the comfort he had left.

But his body was failing him, a little more each day. The medicine wasn’t helping, and his mind felt cloudier than ever. Most days, Daniel was too weak to even get out of bed. Now, hearing the crash from the other room, worry twisted in his stomach, but all he could do was lean over the edge of the bed and hope for an answer.

Isaac didn’t say a word.

The silence made Daniel even more anxious. He tried to push himself up, but his strength gave out, and he hit the floor hard. “Isaac…” His voice was raw. “Isaac!” He called again, desperate now. “Isaac, what’s wrong? Please, answer me. Isaac!”

With nothing left but sheer will, Daniel dragged himself toward the door, using his arms to pull his body forward. Just as he reached the threshold, a shadow loomed over him. He looked up and saw Isaac standing there, eyes dark and distant. Before Daniel could feel any relief, Isaac dropped the box right in front of him with a heavy thud.

“Dad, look inside. What do you think is in there?” Isaac’s voice sounded off, strained and unfamiliar.

From his spot on the floor, Daniel peered up at his son. Isaac’s face was void of emotion, like all the light had been drained out of him. Whatever was in that box, it had shaken him deeply.

Daniel tried to brush it off, thinking maybe it was just another family disaster. “Isaac, is that a delivery? Did Jace do something stupid again? It’s okay. I’ll give him a call and chew him out. Just help me up first, will you?” He reached up, hoping Isaac would take his hand.

But Isaac didn’t move. He just stared at Daniel with a cold, almost cruel look. It was clear he wasn’t going to help.
