Jace walked in, pushing the door open quietly. The moment he saw the bride reflected in the mirror, he froze. For just a second, another face flashed through his mind, blurry and out of reach. He shook his head, trying to clear the thought of Wiona out of his mind. They’d once walked down the aisle together.
He forced himself to focus, taking a deep breath as he looked again at Kellen, the woman he always told himself was the purest love he’d ever known. Today, she’d finally become his wife. This was supposed to be the happiest moment of his life, so why did his heart feel so hollow? He never imagined that when his dream finally came true, it would all feel this unreal.
Behind him, the three bridesmaids burst into giggles.
“Look at him. She’s got him completely dazed.”
“She really does. Why are we still here, anyway? Let’s give them some space.”
“Don’t mess up your makeup, you two.”
Their laughter trailed behind them as the three friends slipped out, leaving the room filled with a warm hush.
Jace took a couple of slow steps toward Kellen. She stood up, cheeks pink and eyes shining, then leaned into his arms.
“Jace, I’m so happy. I’ve been waiting for this day for so long,” she said softly. “From now on, I’m officially your wife. I get to take your name, be your person… Jace, I just feel so lucky.”
She placed her hand gently over his heart. He should have felt it pounding, wild and unstoppable, but somehow he just felt… nothing. Where did all that old excitement go? Why wasn’t he breathless or nervous anymore?
Jace didn’t say anything. He couldn’t bring himself to answer her open, honest confession. He stayed silent until Kellen stood on tiptoe, trying to kiss him. Suddenly, he stepped back, pushing her away.
“Wait… just wait,” he said quietly.
Kellen’s face fell, her smile vanishing. “Wait for what? Jace, what are you waiting for? Do you even realize how strange you’ve been lately? At first, you said it was because of the baby, that we had to be careful. I believed you, because I wanted to do what’s best for the baby. But now the doctor says it’s fine. It’s just a kiss. Why do you keep pulling away?”
She blinked, fighting back tears. “Jace, you’re not… you’re not in love with someone else, are you?”
