“I… I just didn’t know how to turn him down. I’m sorry, Wiona. I hope I didn’t cause you any trouble.” Madison’s voice was soft, her eyes shining with regret. She really hadn’t planned on any of this. She had only meant to drop by and check on Wiona, but somehow, she’d walked right into Conrad’s funeral. If she’d known, she wouldn’t have brought her friend, no matter how rare it was for him to ask her for anything.
No one noticed the flash of surprise in Tatum’s usually unreadable eyes. So this fake heiress from the Morgan family… she was girl called Vivian who’d gone head-to-head with him at the auction over that jade pendant? He and his brothers had already guessed that Wiona, the girl switched with Madison at birth, might be the Blue family’s long-lost child. But now she’d also challenged him for his aunt’s keepsake? Was it all a coincidence, or was the truth finally coming to light?
Either way, this was definitely not the time for questions. Tatum quickly masked his surprise and gave Wiona a polite nod. “Sorry for the interruption, Ms. Morgan. I never realized you were Vivian.”
So he hadn’t come looking for her because of the pendant after all. Wiona found his attitude a little bold, but she hardly had the energy to worry about it right now. Tatum’s words did make the Morgan family look at each other in confusion though. Vivian? What Vivian? None of them even thought of the famous designer, so nobody suspected a thing.
Everyone’s face was heavy with sadness, except for Wiona. She found she couldn’t cry anymore, not a single tear left. Luckily, everyone just assumed she’d already cried herself out, so no one thought it was strange. If anything, they felt even sorrier for her, thinking she was holding all her heartbreak inside.
Not long after, the Clements family arrived, too. Sophie was there in her wheelchair, along with Mrs. and Mr. Clements and a whole crowd of their other children. The room grew crowded and noisy in an instant.
When they saw Conrad’s name etched into the headstone, the truth finally hit them. Conrad was really gone. The air filled with sobs and wails.
“How could this happen?”
“Yeah, how could something like this… He was only twenty-seven!”
“Oh, Annette, I know Conrad was always stubborn, but I told you ages ago to keep a closer eye on him. You just wouldn’t listen. And now look, his whole life lost overseas. What are we supposed to do now?”
“But do we just let Devin take everything from you and your son?”
“Annette, you have to stay strong.”
