“Go ahead and invite them in,” Wiona said to Phil, glancing his way. “Just let them know we’re getting things ready for Conrad’s funeral. If anyone wants to come, they’re welcome.”
Phil left to deliver the message himself. Even though Wiona had no clue what Conrad was really planning, she decided to stand by him and do whatever he needed.
It wasn’t long before the last bit of earth had been shoveled over Conrad’s coffin, the headstone set firmly in place. Seeing Conrad’s name carved into the stone, Wiona had to look away. Her eyes burned with tears again. This was just too much. Why did they have to go through this heartbreaking goodbye as if it were real? She was grateful Conrad had warned her about everything ahead of time. Otherwise, she couldn’t even imagine how she would have survived it.
Still, even if he turned up alive and well after all this, she wasn’t planning to let him off so easily. She took a long, shaky breath, struggling to keep her grief under control. Annette watched her, feeling her own heart twist in pain.
“Wiona, it’s okay to cry,” Annette said gently. “This is your last chance to say goodbye to Conrad. I know it’s hard. You just got married, the babies aren’t even born yet. You have it even tougher than I did…”
Wiona’s face looked even worse than if she’d actually broken down and sobbed.
A few minutes later, Phil came back, leading a group of people to the graveside.
“Wiona!” Madison was the first to rush over, throwing her arms around Wiona and bursting into loud, messy tears, even more heartbroken than Wiona herself. “How could this happen? Life is so unfair to you. Why would fate do this? I hate it, I just hate it…”
Tina came over next, taking Wiona’s hand. She looked lost for words, so she just hugged her. “Wiona, I can’t tell you to be strong right now. But you have to take care of yourself, okay?”
One by one, the others came forward too. Jasmine and Cole both stared at Wiona, like they wanted to say something but couldn’t quite get the words out. Cole finally just sighed. “What kind of fate is this? I guess you just aren’t meant for the good life.”
Jasmine murmured, almost to herself, “How could he really be gone… Wiona, my poor girl…”
