By now, Cassian realized there was no reason to keep anything secret anymore. He motioned for Wiona, her belly round with pregnancy, to sit down first.
“Let’s take it slow,” he said.
Wiona glanced at Conrad, reached for his arm, and gave it a gentle tug. “Sit with me.”
Nikolai and Drake quietly picked up the mess around them while the other bodyguards moved out to block off the area, making sure nobody else could get close. Molly, always quick on her feet, poured everyone some water and brought over a roasted sweet potato for Wiona, still warm and fragrant.
“Madam, you must be starving. Have a bite to keep your strength up.”
Summer could only stand there, wide-eyed. Everyone moved so naturally to take care of Wiona. it was obvious her husband had some serious influence. Was that man in all black, face hidden her husband? Summer could only guess. Wiona didn’t bother with introductions.
Cassian held up the photo, ready to explain. “This picture was mailed to our house, with my name on it. Summer brought it to me.”
Wiona frowned. “I think Wilson sent it,” she said. “He’s clever. He must have realized you weren’t at the hospital anymore, but Summer kept everything quiet, so he couldn’t be sure what was going on. He’s scared you’ll wake up and spill the truth. So he sent the photo to test you, to see what you’d do. He never expected you’d actually keep his secret.”
As Wiona laid it all out, Summer suddenly got it. “Ugh, we totally walked right into his trap. Dad, how could we be so clueless? Who else would send you that picture right now?”
Cassian let out a sigh. “I… I thought it was Bronwen. I always assumed she found out the truth, changed how she treated Wiona, and took her family overseas to avoid the fallout. Was I wrong about all of it?”
Wiona smiled, a little sad. “Eight years ago, nobody even knew Madison and I were switched at birth. How could Bronwen have known I was Wilson’s daughter back then? Besides, it’s not something they can just claim and make it so.”
Cassian slapped his own forehead. “I’m such an old fool sometimes.”
Summer reached over, taking his hand. “Dad, it’s not your fault. You just got out of surgery, barely made it through. It makes sense you’re not thinking straight.”
