Wiona locked eyes with Wilson, hoping to catch even a flicker of deceit. But he was impossible to read. His face was just a mask of heartbreak.
“Wiona, I’m sorry. I never meant for you to get hurt…” His voice shook, as if every word cost him something. “When your mother’s accident happened, I wasn’t even in Stonehill. By the time I heard and rushed back, it was already too late. All I could do was go to the morgue and claim her body. When I tried to find you, you’d already been sent to the orphanage. I saw that you were safe there, so… I left you. You know what Bronwen is like—she’s always been jealous. Even if I brought you home, you wouldn’t have grown up happy. But I never expected you’d be switched at birth, end up with the Morgans, and somehow find your way back to me. Wiona, seeing you now, all grown up, I’m so proud. Your mother would be too, if she could see you.”
Wilson’s face softened with something like relief, but the sight of him only made Wiona’s skin crawl.
“So you’re saying my mother was the other woman? That I’m your secret daughter?” Wiona’s voice was flat. She turned to Bronwen. “Bronwen, did you know about this?”
Bronwen’s answer was a slap across Wilson’s cheek. “You’re unbelievable!” Her voice was trembling. “I never knew… I can’t believe you. And how dare you call me jealous? Wilson, I’m done with you!” Tears spilled down her cheeks as she turned away, hiding her face in Nicholas’s shoulder.
Wilson pressed a hand to his face, his voice turning icy. “Bronwen, admit it. If you hadn’t kept pushing, Luna never would’ve had that accident.”
Bronwen just stared at him, stunned. “After everything I’ve done for you, you’re really blaming me? How could you? Think about how I’ve treated you all these years.”
Wiona had heard enough. “Stop it, both of you.” Her glare was sharp as glass. “If you’re my father, I’ll be ashamed. Cassian, were you really so afraid of what his identity would mean for me that you just kept swallowing the truth? Covered for him, lied for him, all because of some fake status?”
She didn’t believe Wilson was her father. Not for a second. Turning to Cassian, she waited. He looked thrown, almost like he couldn’t process how calm she sounded. Maybe she was in shock. Maybe she just didn’t want to accept it. Summer nudged him, and finally he nodded.
“Yes. I just… I didn’t want to make things harder for you. Wiona, are you really okay with this? What if he actually is your father?”
“It doesn’t matter,” Wiona said, her tone steady. “None of this is an excuse for what he’s done. Mr. Bishop, the suspect is standing right here. Are you going to arrest him or not?”
For the first time, Wilson’s confidence cracked. “Cassian, come on. Even if Wiona doesn’t want to admit it, I am her father. You’ve got it all wrong. You’re blaming me because of your own problems. Sure, I was at the hotel that day, but I have an alibi. No one saw anything. No one can say I pushed you.”
