Conrad slipped his arm around her shoulders, a mischievous smile on his lips. “Because I missed you, of course.”
He tipped her chin up gently, then leaned in and kissed her.
Lately, Conrad had been coming home often for the holiday, but always in the middle of the night. Wiona, with her growing belly, could barely keep her eyes open past dinner. She fell asleep early every night, long before Conrad ever made it through the door. His visits never followed a pattern. Sometimes he’d show up after two days, sometimes three, so she never tried to wait up for him.
Each time, she only realized he’d been home when she found a rose on her nightstand the next morning. Conrad never woke her, as he didn’t want to interrupt her rest. He just slipped in and out quietly, longing for moments like this one.
They snuggled together on the sofa, kissing and holding each other for several minutes before finally pulling apart—reluctantly.
Conrad tried not to get too carried away. As Wiona’s pregnancy got further along, he knew getting too passionate could trigger false contractions, which was risky with twins. So now, he kept things sweet, careful not to go too far. Wiona’s safety came first, no matter how much he wanted more. He was only human, after all, and a new husband to boot.
After that kiss, Conrad buried his face in the curve of her neck and let out a long sigh.
“Wiona, I wish time would just hurry up.”
Wiona’s face turned rosy. She knew exactly what he meant. If time moved faster, the babies would be born and they could finally… really be together.
Truth was, they’d done just about everything except the final step. But for Conrad, it still felt incomplete.
Their story was a little wild. They were about to become parents before they’d slept with each other. Maybe that was fate, in its own strange way.
She almost laughed at the thought, but instead, she just patted his shoulder softly. “It’ll go by fast, I promise.”
“I’m almost twenty-eight weeks, and with twins, there’s always a chance they’ll come early. Before you know it, you’ll be a dad. Get ready for it.”
That seemed to lift Conrad’s mood a bit.
Trying to distract him, Wiona switched topics, looping back to her earlier question. “You still haven’t told me why you’re here today.”
“Did you really just come to see me?”
“And what about Devin? Have you dealt with him? When are you coming home for good?”
Conrad turned, stretching his arm along the back of the sofa, looking relaxed. “I came to see you, obviously.”
“I heard from Nikolai that you’d be here to visit your mentor. I’d just finished up with some things, so I thought I’d stop by.”
“As for Devin, I’ve thrown a few things his way to keep him busy. For now, he’s too preoccupied to bother with the three of you.”
