“Please, come back. Dad isn’t avoiding you because he doesn’t want to see you. He just… he feels too ashamed to face you.”
Wiona turned, her expression uncertain.
That was when Owen walked in.
He glanced at them, confused. “What’s going on?”
Summer looked at both of them, her face a mix of emotions. “Take a seat, please. My dad will be out soon.”
She headed to the bedroom door and knocked softly, her voice low but clear. “Dad, can you come out?”
“We can’t just let the bad guys get away with this.”
“It’s been so long now. You wanted to cover for them, but have they ever shown the slightest regret?”
“When they tried to hurt you, they never once cared if you lived or died.”
“If it weren’t for Wiona, I would have lost you a long time ago.”
“Dad, Wiona and Mr. Bishop are both here. Please, just come out.”
Wiona heard every word and finally turned fully toward the door.
She’d always been suspicious by nature, and right now, she stared at that door, desperate to know what could possibly make both Summer and Cassian so hesitant, so scared to even tell her the truth.
She started walking toward the door. At last, it opened.
Cassian stepped out, his eyes full of pain and a tired kind of affection when he looked at Wiona. “Wiona, are you sure you want to know the truth?”
“You might regret it.”
Wiona stopped in her tracks, meeting his gaze head-on, her voice steady and clear. “No. I never regret the choices I make.”
Cassian let out a long, heavy sigh.
“I should have known… that’s just who you are.”
“Life can really mess with us sometimes…”
Summer came over to help Wiona sit down.
The four of them settled in the garden. Nikolai and Drake quietly cleared the area and guarded every entrance, making sure nobody was close enough to overhear.
Owen took out his recorder and a notepad, ready to take notes.
Cassian knew what they wanted to know most, so he got right to the point. “It was Wilson. He’s the one who pushed me.”
“It wasn’t an accident.”
“He pushed me down the stairs.”
Wiona had suspected it for a long time, but hearing it confirmed still made her body tense up. She jumped up from her seat.
“Careful…” Summer reached out quickly, steadying Wiona and glancing at her stomach.
