Wiona snapped awake, her mind instantly clear.
A rose?
She was sure there hadn’t been any roses in her room before. Now, right there on her nightstand, lay a beautiful rose. Beneath it was a giftbox.
Curious, Wiona picked it up. She realized it had been years since anyone had given her a new year gift. The sight of it made her grin. “So last night really happened, huh?”
Thinking back on all the passion and sweetness from just hours before, Wiona brought the rose to her nose, cheeks burning all over again. Knowing he was safe somewhere out there, her heart finally relaxed.
She reached for her phone and noticed a message from Conrad. Without hesitation, she opened it. It was a voice note. “Wiona, this is the first flower from the greenhouse this year. For you, my baby.”
“Wishing you peace and happiness. Happy New Year.”
Just hearing him call her baby made her heart skip. She found herself loving this new boldness. Sweetness bubbled up inside her, almost too much to contain, her lips curving into an uncontrollable smile.
She typed back right away. [Conrad, Happy New Year!]
[And promise me you’ll check in every day, okay?]
Even though she understood Conrad was hiding his return for a reason, her worry for him lingered. She just couldn’t help it. Maybe this was what it meant to really care about someone. It was so different from her past with Jace. That had been a nightmare she didn’t want to revisit.
Downstairs, Wiona spotted Annette at the dining table, looking a little out of sorts. Wiona went over and handed her the gift she’d prepared.
“Mom, Happy New Year.”
It was a jewelry set, custom made at her studio. She hadn’t designed it herself, but no one else in the world would have the same one.
Annette’s eyes widened in surprise. “For me?”
Not since her husband passed away had anyone shown her this kind of care. More than once, she’d spent New Year’s Eve alone, not in the mood to come back or join in the Clements family’s noisy celebrations, choosing instead to travel and escape.
But today felt different. There was a warmth in this house that she hadn’t felt in ages.
Wiona caught the emotion in Annette’s eyes and pressed the envelope into her hand. “Wishing you peace, good health, and happiness.”
