She woke up hungry.
Her stomach grumbled, so she slipped out of bed, careful not to wake the maid sitting nearby. Barefoot, she crept out of her room and tiptoed downstairs to the living room. There, Alice grabbed a piece of fruit from the table and popped it into her mouth.
She didn’t get far before Phil caught her. He was just about to head out to check on the fireworks when he spotted her.
“Miss Alice?”
She froze, looking like a deer caught in headlights, then turned to run. Phil caught up with her easily.
“Where are you going?”
“Are you hungry?”
“And where are your shoes and your coat?”
“Did you sneak down here all by yourself?”
Alice’s cheeks turned bright red. She stomped her foot and twisted her hands together. “Phil, please don’t tell Wiona. I really don’t want her to worry about me.”
Phil looked at her and felt a wave of relief. She seemed more like her usual self tonight.
“Do you remember what happened earlier?” he asked.
She just blinked at him, confused.
Phil smiled, brushing it off. “Never mind. It doesn’t matter.”
“You must be starving,” he said. “The kitchen always has food ready for you. I’ll go grab something. Fruit isn’t enough.”
He led her into the dining room and brought her a plate of food himself. Alice ate quickly, almost inhaling her meal. Meanwhile, Phil used his earpiece to call the maid who was supposed to be watching Alice.
“Bring her coat and shoes downstairs.”
The maid panicked when she realized Alice was missing and rushed down with the clothes. Phil shot her a stern look.
“This can’t happen again. Go get some rest.”
The maid nodded quickly and left. Phil knelt down and gently put Alice’s shoes on her feet.
“Miss Alice, after you finish eating, do you want to rest or come outside with me to play with fireworks in the garden?”
Alice’s eyes sparkled. She looked up at him, excited. “Fireworks? Really? I can play with them?”
“I’ve never played with fireworks before. My brother always said they’re dangerous.”
Phil paused, surprised. He hadn’t realized she’d never even held a sparkler.
