Divorced and Pregnant My New Life with a Billionaire Drives My Ex Crazy novel Chapter 493

Phil’s expression flickered, a split-second of discomfort that almost no one caught. He cleared his throat and kept his tone casual. “I just promised her a trip to the amusement park in a couple of days. That seemed to cheer her up.”

Really? Wiona had her doubts. With how Alice was acting earlier, it was hard to believe she heard a single word anyone said. Still, Phil always seemed to know how to calm Alice down, so Wiona let it go.

Annette, on the other hand, took Phil’s words at face value. “Then it’s settled,” she said with a small smile. “Let’s all take Alice to the amusement park.”

Then she turned to Jason. “Dr. Jason, I’d like to discuss a few things about Alice with you, if you have a moment…”

Annette and Jason left the room together.

Once Alice had drifted off to sleep, Wiona stood and headed out into the hallway with Phil at her side.

“Phil, I’m going to have to count on you to look after Alice more from now on,” she said quietly. “She listens to you more than she does her own brother.”

The truth was, Alice was more afraid of Conrad than she was close to him. Conrad had always done his best for his little sister. He’d been nothing but attentive since she was a child, but Alice never really depended on him. She’d mention her brother from time to time, but when she actually had to face Conrad, dressed all in black as usual, she’d freeze up and stay as far away as possible. Even when she got close, she was always nervous. And no matter how hard Conrad tried, he couldn’t always comfort Alice right away.

Phil was different. His uniform was black too, but Alice never seemed afraid of him. That was when Wiona realized there was something special about Phil.

Phil nodded respectfully. “Of course, ma’am. Taking care of Miss Alice is my responsibility. I’ll pay even closer attention from now on.”

He glanced at the clock. “But, ma’am, it’s already eight o’clock. Shouldn’t we start dinner?”

Wiona barely had the heart for it. There was still no word from Conrad, and he hadn’t come home. Alice had relapsed and was finally asleep after her medicine. There was a dangerous man living upstairs. How could she and Annette think about celebrating?

But she knew everyone at Hawthorne Hall was waiting for her signal. As the lady of the house, she had to keep things together.

She looked at Phil. “All right. Let’s begin.”

The garden sparkled with strings of lights and decorations. Heaters kept the winter chill out and filled the air with a cozy warmth.

This year, Wiona had sent most of the staff home for the holidays. The ones who stayed volunteered for ten times their usual pay and, this time, everyone—staff and family alike—would celebrate together. Even with everything that had happened, the place still felt lively.
